The company is the company, an engineering firm with more than 3,000 staff across North America. It works for clients in aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, EVs, rail and other sectors, covering a product's development from consulting through full project outsourcing.
It is part of the ALTEN Group, which has over 57,000 engineers in 30 countries.
This role supports development, testing and validation of heavy-duty powertrain systems in a powertrain engineering laboratory that works with conventional, electric and fuel-cell technologies. The work centres on test automation platforms, software tools, regression-testing applications, laboratory databases and supporting infrastructure, and includes EPA and CARB regulatory testing.
Key areas include test-system control, data acquisition, engine dynamometer environments, test-cell automation, fuel conditioning and measurement, emissions instruments and combustion analysis platforms.
Responsibilities
You will work in a powertrain data and software team that builds and supports applications for test-cell operations, data collection, storage and analysis, with the aim of improving lab efficiency.
You will work with engineers, technicians, lab staff and other stakeholders to pin down technical needs, build practical fixes and steadily make lab systems more reliable.
Build and run automated test procedures on lab automation platforms.
Maintain and extend the databases used for lab operations and test data.
Connect intelligent hardware and lab instruments over a range of communication protocols.
Create user interfaces and software applications for test-cell work and engineering workflows.
Find and fix software and hardware faults in engine and powertrain test environments.
Record technical problems, fixes and confirmed solutions using established troubleshooting methods.
Write C scripts, utilities and applications that improve test methods, data quality, data reduction and productivity.
Set up and operate PC-based test and measurement equipment, including CAN and vehicle-network analysis tools.
Use vendor APIs to extend lab equipment and build custom engineering solutions.
Build and maintain automation protocols for performance, durability and other powertrain tests.
Design, build and maintain SQL databases and ASP.NET MVC web interfaces.
Act as the software link between lab technicians, engineers and test-planning teams, and give them technical support.
Support regulatory and compliance testing in the powertrain lab.
Write clear technical documentation covering software tools, automation features, system requirements and operating procedures.
Find ways to make the lab more efficient, reliable and cost-effective through software and automation.
Work with internal users to understand their problems, rank requirements and deliver solutions that last.
Help keep lab data and analytics systems stable and developing over the long term.
Requirements
You are a software engineer who enjoys automation, data systems and engineering applications, and likes hard technical problems and hands-on lab work alongside engineers and technicians.
You pick up new technologies quickly, can connect software to physical test equipment, and build practical tools that improve testing and data-driven engineering.
You are happy to share knowledge, try new approaches and work across teams to raise lab capability.
A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a related technical field is required.
A master's degree is preferred.
Ten or more years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in place of a bachelor's degree.
Strong C programming experience.
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and database development.
Experience building applications with ASP.NET MVC.
Familiarity with Git and command-line workflows.
Experience with software communication protocols and hardware interfaces.
Understanding of data collection, data reduction and engineering data analysis.
Strong troubleshooting, analysis and problem-solving skills.
Basic project management experience.
Able to work well with engineers, technicians, software developers and other technical stakeholders.
Required skills: C, Microsoft SQL and SQL Server, ASP.NET MVC, HTML, CSS, Git, software and hardware integration, test automation, data acquisition and analysis, communication protocols.
Preferred skills: Python, experience with CAN-based communication and analysis tools, experience with test-cell automation systems, experience integrating vendor APIs and lab instruments, familiarity with engine testing and dynamometer environments, knowledge of diesel engines and after-treatment systems, experience with emissions or combustion measurement systems, experience supporting regulatory or compliance testing.
You will combine software development with hands-on support in a powertrain lab, so you need to be comfortable with both applications and physical test equipment, and able to explain issues to technical teams so that automation and data solutions stay reliable.
