Software Engineering Senior Manager

Description

The company provides vehicle history information that helps people shop, buy, service and sell used cars. Its CARFAX division is used by millions of people every day.

You will join a software team whose work is used by banking and insurance companies, and the role sits at the senior management level.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a group of 24+ software and quality assurance engineers split across 3 subgroups, each with its own manager, helping them become self-directed teams that deliver well through mentoring and coaching.
• Move existing applications onto AWS cloud infrastructure, applying current technologies and sound engineering practices.
• Work closely with Product Management, Project Services and Data Center Operations to build web applications, APIs and batch systems for banking and insurance clients, keeping a healthy balance between business work and technical work.
• Coach teams in Agile, Lean and Extreme Programming to get the most out of their delivery speed and product quality.
• Turn team goals into plans that support department and company objectives, measure outcomes, and drive ongoing improvement.
• Advise stakeholders on technical matters, helping shape product direction and architecture through collaborative decisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• 2+ years in an engineering management role leading development teams.
• A record of managing performance and leading teams in Agile product development.
• Fluent English, with the ability to explain things clearly to both technical and non-technical people.
• Confidence to make strategic decisions when the situation is unclear.
• A collaborative leadership style that builds consensus and gets results through influence.
• Ability to adapt and set priorities when internal and external demands compete.
• A genuine interest in mentoring people and helping them grow professionally.
• Preferred: hands-on software development experience with the company's stack: Java/Groovy, React, Spring, AWS, REST/GraphQL, and SQL/NoSQL.
• Preferred: experience with test-driven development (TDD, BDD, DDD) and modern tools such as Gradle and GitLab.
• Preferred: experience balancing project delivery against production support while juggling competing internal and external priorities.
• Preferred: a track record of making data-driven decisions in quick-moving environments and of turning business goals into technical plans.
• Preferred: experience leading teams through technology transformations and managing change.
• Preferred: experience managing relationships with a range of internal and external partners.
• Preferred: a habit of improving processes and a record of putting those improvements in place.

Conditions

Pay is set to match local market conditions and individual contribution. Base salary may be supplemented by incentive pay, long-term incentives and a full benefits package, where applicable.
