Software Engineer

We are hiring software engineers for the Software Systems Capability function, based in Derby or Solihull.

The role sits in the Digital category and suits a mid-career professional.

Responsibilities

• Specify, design, build and deliver high-quality software components and their supporting artefacts to agreed timelines and quality standards.
• Break designs down in a structured way, then analyse and test them to confirm they meet the allocated requirements.
• Build components across their lifecycle, from high-level software requirements through to verification, aiming for DO178 objectives whether the work is model-based or hand-coded.
• Review verification and test results, reach technical conclusions, and help investigate defects, resolve them and analyse customer issues.
• Follow configuration management and change control practices in a DevOps environment.
• Work in an Agile way with cross-functional engineers to understand system requirements and integrate components into the wider architecture.
• Write technical documents and reports that record design decisions, verification outcomes and development activity.
• Where needed, help grow the department's capability through process improvement, knowledge sharing, tool development, training support and long-term planning.

Requirements

• Practical experience in software design, system or hardware architecture, embedded software development and module-level testing, using either model-based or C-based development.
• Working knowledge of engineering lifecycle processes, constraints and related engineering disciplines.
• Proficiency with the design, modelling, simulation and analysis tools used in the role.
• Ability to interpret technical data and test results, allowing for measurement uncertainty, and to raise risks or suitability concerns with confidence.
• Strong skills in owning tasks, setting priorities and managing risk, and delivering work to completion under pressure or in changing conditions.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability with close attention to detail.
• Clear written and verbal communication, able to present complex technical information to varied audiences.
• Works well in a team and can also work independently when required.
• Keeps learning through research and professional development, and is willing to share knowledge or deliver training.

Conditions

Permanent contract of 37 hours per week.

Location is Derby or Solihull.

Candidates in certain locations may be asked to complete an online assessment that can include cognitive and behavioural aptitude testing.
