This Staff Fullstack Engineer role sits in the Retail Transaction domain and gives you technical leadership across two engineering teams.
The team works on one of the company's most critical customer journeys, the checkout, and the work reaches millions of customers across Europe.
The company is Europe's No.1 e-pharmacy.
Current stack: React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.
Responsibilities
Set architecture for the Transaction domain, giving technical direction to two teams and related domains, and design scalable distributed frontend and backend solutions.
Guide complex architecture decisions and weigh performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost with data, while spotting risks that reach beyond one team.
Stay hands-on across frontend and backend, building customer-facing features in React and backend capabilities in Java, from discovery and design through to production.
Help lay the groundwork for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
Push architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability practices across teams, turning recurring problems into shared patterns, guidelines and platform capabilities.
Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and other dependent teams where ownership and technical priorities overlap, and mentor engineers and lead design discussions without formal authority.
Work with Product, UX and engineering leadership to find opportunities, test assumptions and turn business needs into a sustainable technical strategy, using metrics and trends to prioritise investments and decide when to evolve existing systems or adopt new technologies.
Requirements
Deep hands-on frontend experience with React and TypeScript, plus professional backend experience in at least one language or framework such as Node.js, Java or Python.
You are comfortable across the full stack, contribute to production backend services and APIs, and own customer-facing applications.
You have worked at Staff or Principal level, or have equivalent technical scope, designing complex systems and driving architecture decisions that affect several teams or domains.
Senior engineers come to you for input, and you can build technical agreement when requirements, constraints and opinions conflict.
You have a proven record of leading through influence and growing other engineers, mentoring experienced engineers, running architecture discussions, introducing standards and enabling teams to decide well without becoming a bottleneck.
You pair technical depth with sound business and product judgement, work well with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders, and use metrics to guide decisions with the wider organisation in mind.
Strong plus: experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems.
Valuable: exposure to native Android with Kotlin or iOS with Swift development, as the domain moves in that direction.
