Description

The company is Europe's largest e-pharmacy, and the role sits in the Retail Transaction domain, which covers one of its most important customer journeys.

You will take technical lead across two engineering teams, working on checkout across web, backend and, increasingly, native mobile, and aligning with payments, orders and shipping.

The work reaches millions of customers across Europe.

Tech stack: React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Set architecture direction across the Transaction domain and connected areas, designing scalable frontend and backend solutions.
  • Guide complex architecture decisions, making pragmatic, data-driven trade-offs on performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost, and flag risks that reach beyond one team.
  • Stay hands-on in React and TypeScript for customer-facing features and in backend services and APIs, taking part from early discovery and system design through to production.
  • Help lay the groundwork for future native iOS and Android checkout.
  • Drive adoption of architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability practices across teams, turning recurring problems into shared patterns, guidelines and platform capabilities.
  • Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and other dependent teams where ownership and priorities overlap.
  • Mentor engineers, lead architecture and design discussions, and set technical direction without relying on formal authority.
  • Work with Product, UX and engineering leadership to find opportunities, test assumptions and turn business needs into a sustainable technical strategy.
  • Use data, metrics and industry trends to weigh trade-offs, prioritise high-impact investment, and decide when to evolve existing systems versus adopt new technology.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on frontend experience with React and TypeScript, plus professional backend experience in at least one language or framework such as Node.js, Java, Python or similar.
  • Comfortable working across the full stack, contributing to production backend services and APIs and owning customer-facing applications.
  • Experience at Staff or Principal level, or equivalent technical scope, designing complex systems and driving architecture decisions that affect multiple teams or domains.
  • Senior engineers come to you for input, and you can build technical agreement where requirements, constraints and opinions conflict.
  • A proven record of leading through influence and growing other engineers, including mentoring experienced engineers, facilitating design discussions, introducing standards and enabling teams to decide well without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Strong business and product judgement alongside technical depth, working well with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders, using metrics to guide decisions and thinking about the best outcome for the wider organisation.
  • Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems is a strong plus. Exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift is valuable.
