Description

The company uses space to help life on Earth.

The company designs, builds and runs the largest imaging satellite constellation ever built. The constellation feeds a cloud platform with data for commercial, environmental and humanitarian customers. It is both a space business and a data business.

Customers worldwide use the data to build technologies, grow revenue, support research and tackle hard problems.

The company controls hardware, manufacturing, data processing and software itself, so the office brings together experts from many fields.

The culture centres on people. Teams work in iterations that put members first and prepare the company for growth.

Staff work remotely around the world and also join from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and The Netherlands.

The Platform team builds systems that let customers reach and analyse daily and high-resolution imagery, plus derived products such as Basemaps. Customers browse data catalogs, stream data through tile services and run geospatial analysis.

The team is spread across Europe and North America and mostly communicates asynchronously. It uses a stack of Go, Python, Java, Postgres and Kubernetes on major clouds such as Google Cloud, with a focus on scalable, observable systems built on open source and standards where they fit.

Applications close at 11:45p / 23:45 CET on the date stated below. Reviews run on a rolling basis, and the posting may be removed early once enough suitable applications arrive, so applying soon is recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Build, deploy and maintain fast, distributed, large-scale services and highly available APIs in Go, Java and/or Python, with a clear focus on customer experience.
  • Work closely with engineers and product managers across several cross-functional teams to align product and engineering goals.
  • Write production code that is high quality, maintainable, observable and well documented.
  • Review colleagues' code to keep quality and standards high.
  • Use AI tools across the development lifecycle, and hold AI-assisted work to the same standard as code you write by hand.
  • Keep growing as a developer, improve the products and customers, and bring the team along as your expertise develops.
  • Run the APIs and services you build using Site Reliability Engineering practices: measure performance, load test, set up and tune alerts, dashboards and runbooks, and respond to incidents.
  • Take part in the on-call rotation for fast response to the team's external and internal services.

Requirements

  • At least 4+ years of software development in a production environment, preferably with Python, Java and/or Go.
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Computer Science or Geosciences, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A solid grasp of software engineering best practices and development methods.
  • Strong written and verbal collaboration skills. You can write an engineering design proposal and gather feedback to drive shared decisions.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly on your own, work through uncertain and ambiguous problems, and take calculated risks.
  • Experience with varied data storage systems, such as relational databases, document stores and key-value stores.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
  • Experience with Git, large codebases, reviewing merge requests and running complex CI/CD pipelines.
  • Comfort working with Docker containers.
  • Experience deploying to Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with GCP or AWS.
  • A good sense of when AI helps in software development and when it does not.
  • Stand out: familiarity with geospatial concepts and standards, such as GeoTIFFs, GeoJSON and STAC.
  • Stand out: familiarity with remotely sensed products and their metadata, including why someone would want an ortho-rectified product.
  • Stand out: experience with observability platforms such as Grafana.
