Description

The company is building tools to make finance accessible to everyone.

An estimated $124 trillion in assets is expected to pass to younger generations within the next two decades, the largest transfer of wealth in history.

The Exchange Platform team manages the full service lifecycle for the company's exchange, which launched in 2011 as the world's first regulated crypto exchange and is now part of a larger group.

The team builds the modern, high-speed systems behind the company's global expansion and keeps the world's longest-running exchange stable.

This Staff Backend Engineer role sets the technical direction, long-term architecture and engineering standards for the platform's modernization. You will be a main technical leader across the exchange ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Set the long-term architecture for highly available, low-latency cloud platforms and define engineering standards for performance, reliability and portability worldwide.
  • Lead multi-quarter modernization work that moves core services into resilient containerized cloud environments, and improve deployment pipelines and auto-scaling.
  • Lead the technical alignment and distributed architecture that connects the exchange backend with the company's global infrastructure, resolving cross-organization challenges.
  • Anticipate future scaling bottlenecks and design self-healing systems and intelligent automation that cut operational load and speed up developers.
  • Own ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from start to finish, weighing speed, resilience, cost and maintainability.
  • Mentor senior engineers, lead architecture design reviews and set engineering best practices across the organization.
  • Serve as the senior escalation point for high-severity incidents, lead thorough post-mortems and put systemic safeguards in place to protect the 24/7 platform.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in backend and distributed systems engineering, including work as a technical lead or Staff-level engineer in high-scale environments.
  • Advanced skill with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and with enterprise AWS services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Aurora and DynamoDB.
  • Deep understanding of high-concurrency, low-latency backend design, event-driven systems, fault tolerance and data consistency models.
  • A track record of taking ambiguous, organization-wide problems to production and delivering high business impact.
  • Strong communication skills: you can build technical consensus, shape cross-functional roadmaps and align senior engineering and product stakeholders across several geographies.
  • A pragmatic, systems-minded approach that balances forward-looking architecture with the demands of running a 24/7 financial exchange.

Conditions

The role is based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week.

Participation in an on-call rotation is required to support business needs.

The company uses AI tools to support parts of its recruiting process, but all hiring decisions are made by hiring teams.

Benefits

  • Challenging, high-impact work that supports your career growth.
  • Performance-based pay, with multipliers for outsized impact and bonus programs.
  • Health coverage including supplemental health insurance, ancillary insurance and mental health support programs.
  • Access to top AI tools and ongoing AI skill-building for all employees, technical or not.
  • An employer-paid lifestyle wallet, a flexible spending account that covers costs beyond standard benefits such as wellness, childcare and learning.
  • Time off for rest, including company holidays, paid time off, sick time, paid volunteer time off and parental leave.
  • Office perks including catered meals, events and comfortable workspaces.
  • A monthly commuter stipend to help offset in-office commuting costs.
  • Total Rewards details vary by region and entity.
