Description

The company builds and runs the largest fleet of imaging satellites ever flown, and it is both a space business and a data business.

Its satellite data goes through a cloud platform to customers in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian work, who use it for new technologies, revenue, research, and hard global problems.

The company handles hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software itself, so the office brings together specialists from many fields.

Staff work remotely around the world and also join from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and the Netherlands.

The Platform team builds and runs systems that let customers browse data catalogs, stream data through tile services, and run geospatial analysis on daily and high-resolution imagery and derived products such as Basemaps.

The stack includes Go, Python, Java, Postgres, and Kubernetes on major clouds such as Google Cloud, with a focus on scalable, observable systems and open source tools and standards where they fit.

The team is spread across Europe and North America and communicates mostly asynchronously. Applications close at 23:45 CET on the date stated below, are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the posting may be taken down early.

Responsibilities

  • Build, ship, and maintain fast, distributed, large-scale services and highly available APIs in Go, Java, or Python, with customer experience as the top priority.
  • Work with engineers and product managers across several cross-functional teams to align product and engineering goals.
  • Write production code that is high quality, maintainable, observable, and well documented.
  • Review code from teammates to keep quality and standards high.
  • Use AI tools across the development lifecycle and hold AI-assisted work to the same standard as code you write yourself.
  • Keep growing as a developer, improve products and customer outcomes, and help the team grow with your skills.
  • Run your APIs and services using SRE practice: measure performance, load test, tune alerts, build dashboards and runbooks, and respond to incidents.
  • Take part in the rapid response on-call rotation for the team's external and internal services.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of software development in production, preferably with Python, Java, and/or Go.
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Computer Science or Geosciences, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A solid grasp of software engineering best practices and development methodologies.
  • Strong written and spoken collaboration. You can write an engineering design proposal and gather feedback to reach joint decisions.
  • The ability to learn new technologies quickly and on your own, work through uncertain and ambiguous problems, and take calculated risks.
  • Experience with varied data storage systems such as relational databases, document stores, and key-value stores.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience with Git, large codebases, reviewing merge requests, and running complex CI/CD pipelines.
  • Comfort working with Docker containers and deploying to Kubernetes.
  • A good sense of when AI helps in software development and when it does not.
  • Familiarity with GCP or AWS.
  • What makes you stand out: familiarity with geospatial concepts and standards such as GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, and STAC.
  • What makes you stand out: familiarity with remotely sensed products and their metadata, including why someone needs an ortho-rectified product.
  • What makes you stand out: experience with observability platforms such as Grafana.
