Description

The company designs, builds and runs the largest fleet of imaging satellites ever flown, and sends the data through a cloud platform to organisations in commercial, environmental and humanitarian work.

It is a space company and a data company at once, and it builds its own hardware, manufacturing, data processing and software.

Customers and users worldwide apply this data to build new technologies, grow revenue, support research and tackle major problems on Earth.

Staff work remotely across the world and also come into offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and The Netherlands.

The Platform teams build and run the systems that let customers reach and analyse daily and high-resolution imagery and derived products such as Basemaps. Customers browse data catalogs, stream data through tile services and run geospatial analysis.

The team spans Europe and North America, works mainly through asynchronous communication, and holds occasional on-sites at the company's offices.

The stack includes Go, Python, Java, Postgres and Kubernetes on major clouds such as Google Cloud, with a focus on scalable, observable systems built on open source tools and standards where they fit.

Responsibilities

  • Build, ship and maintain fast, distributed, large-scale services and highly available APIs in Go, Java and/or Python, keeping the customer experience at the centre.
  • Work with engineers and product managers across several cross-functional teams to align product and engineering goals.
  • Write production code that is high quality, easy to maintain, observable and well documented.
  • Review colleagues' code to keep quality and standards high.
  • Use AI tools across the development lifecycle, and judge AI-assisted work by the same standard as code you write yourself.
  • Keep growing as a developer, improve the company's products and customers, and bring the rest of the team along as your skills develop.
  • Run your APIs and services using site reliability practices: measure performance, load test, set up and tune alerts and dashboards, write runbooks and respond to incidents.
  • Take part in the rapid response on-call rotation covering the team's external and internal services.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of software development in production, preferably with Python, Java and/or Go.
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Computer Science, Geosciences or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A solid grasp of software engineering best practices and development methods.
  • Strong teamwork and communication, both written and spoken, including writing engineering design proposals and asking for feedback to reach joint decisions.
  • Familiarity with GCP or AWS.
  • The ability to pick up new technologies quickly and on your own, work through unclear and ambiguous problems, and take calculated risks.
  • Experience with varied data storage, such as relational databases, document stores and key-value stores.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
  • Experience with Git, large codebases, merge request reviews and complex CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience working with Docker containers.
  • Experience deploying to Kubernetes.
  • A clear sense of where AI helps in software development and where it does not.
  • What makes you stand out: familiarity with geospatial concepts and standards, including GeoTIFF, GeoJSON and STAC.
  • What makes you stand out: familiarity with remote sensing products and their metadata, such as why someone would want an ortho-rectified product.
  • What makes you stand out: experience with observability platforms such as Grafana.
