Description

Payout Core is a newly formed team that owns the payout domain. Whenever money needs to go out, whether for a customer transfer, a business payout or an internal operational flow, this domain receives the request, picks the partner integration to use based on availability, bank holidays and operating windows, runs the payment, retries on failure and produces the delivery estimates customers see.

Every outgoing payment at the company passes through systems this team owns.

The team is being built from scratch. The Engineering Lead will set its technical direction, lead its engineers and work toward a long-term goal: a product-agnostic payout platform that any team in the company can use to send money.

Responsibilities

  • Act as tech lead: own the quality of the team's technical work, including code quality, architecture, performance, reliability and alignment with company engineering standards.
  • Own the domain's technical roadmap, from evolving the architecture to designing the next generation of smart routing.
  • Make sure the team builds the right product in a scalable and sustainable way.
  • Write code, review code and contribute to delivery alongside the team.
  • Act as people manager: set goals, track productivity, define career paths and support each engineer's growth.
  • Decide the team's size and skill mix, including when and whom to hire.
  • Shape the team's ways of working as it becomes an independent, focused unit.
  • Drive the payout vision, align stakeholders across the organization and represent the team in cross-team architecture discussions, both reviewing and writing RFCs that affect the payout domain.

Requirements

  • Candidates who meet only some of the skills below are encouraged to apply, as the company supports learning on the job.
  • Experience as a tech lead or engineering manager, with a record of developing engineers and building high-performing, autonomous teams.
  • A strong product mindset: you prioritize customer needs, make decisions with data, and understand the problem a build solves and its expected impact.
  • Strong ownership, clear communication and a collaborative approach. You can lead cross-team projects and explain complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to define a technical vision and turn it into a concrete roadmap.
  • Extensive experience with Java or Kotlin, including the Spring framework and microservice best practices.
  • Skilled with relational databases, including query optimization and robust schema design.
  • A firm advocate of good coding practices who writes testable code and takes an active part in code reviews and open feedback.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity in a new team that still has much to define.
  • A results-driven person who gets things done.
  • Experience with payments or financial infrastructure.
  • Experience building highly reliable, highly available systems in high-traffic environments.
  • Success in the first months means: you know the team, the domain and where Payout Core fits in the wider organization; you understand the causes of failed payouts and customer problems and how to fix them; you know each engineer's strengths and growth areas and have earned their trust; you set the technical direction with confidence, in decisions the team and stakeholders accept; and you help the company scale into a strong payout platform by solving its technical problems.

Conditions

Starting salary is €6,666 to €8,333 gross per month, plus Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).

The role is hybrid.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes diverse candidates.

Benefits

  • Work with a large impact: every outgoing payment passes through this team's systems, and its technical choices shape how money reaches every recipient and product.
  • Join experienced engineers who already know the payout domain and are keen to move it forward as a dedicated unit.
  • Help define the practices, ways of working and technical identity of a newly formed team, built on solid existing foundations and an empowered team culture.
  • Help shape a long-term vision that is still taking form: better payment routing across partners and a product-agnostic payout platform.
  • The role's scope grows as the payout platform does.
  • Work with a domain-expert team and receive direct support from engineering leadership across the organization.
