Description

You will be a Principal Engineer on the Payments Technology and Engineering team, setting technical direction and designing top-tier solutions for products that process millions of B2B payments.

This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role that combines software development, architecture, coaching, and work with Product, Architecture, Database, DevOps, Performance Engineering, and Operations. It is not an advisory-only position.

You bring an AI-first approach to everything from daily coding to system design, using agentic AI tooling as a standard part of the software development lifecycle.

Your impact comes through system design, architecture, mentoring, and influence across teams.

The company provides accounts payable automation software and payment solutions for middle-market businesses and their suppliers. It was founded in 2000 in Charlotte, NC, and has over 1,300 employees working across the US or remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Set and drive the technical approach, system design choices, and engineering standards for the Payments platform.
  • Improve scalability, reliability, and observability using API-first and event-driven design, distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, and fault-tolerant patterns such as circuit breakers and retries with backoff.
  • Work with solution and enterprise architects and developers to find designs that are efficient, maintainable, and scalable for new and existing capabilities.
  • Work with Product, Business Operations, and engineering leaders to match technical solutions to business needs and shape the engineering roadmap.
  • Make agentic AI coding the default way the team builds software, using AI agents to scaffold, implement, test, and review code.
  • Use AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or VS Code with GitHub Copilot every day, and help set team standards for them.
  • Apply AI-driven practices such as intelligent automation, predictive analytics, and self-healing systems to improve development speed and system resilience.
  • Design and deliver AI-based solutions for Payments initiatives, from proof of concept to production.
  • Show the team how to think AI-first by testing new AI tools, sharing what works, and pushing for higher leverage.
  • Debug and optimize code for performance and security, keeping in mind the compliance rules that apply to payment processing, such as PCI-DSS.
  • Own code quality and unit test coverage, and work with QA to design and review test cases that meet customer expectations.
  • Review code and approve pull requests against documented standards and best practices.
  • Own the health of the software delivery pipeline and lead improvements to it.
  • Write code, build proofs of concept, and pair with engineers while also setting architectural direction.
  • Mentor and coach developers, especially senior engineers, through code reviews, design discussions, and technical guidance.
  • Work closely with Product and Operations so technical work fits business goals and daily operations.
  • Shape engineering culture and product direction across the team and the company through technical leadership.
  • Own features end to end by researching technical options, advising on the best path, and building proofs of concept to test it.

Requirements

  • Required: Show a proven agentic AI-first approach to the software lifecycle, with hands-on skill in AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or VS Code with GitHub Copilot.
  • Required: Have experience building AI agents with tools and frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, Databricks, vector databases, and open- and closed-weight LLMs.
  • Required: Be comfortable evaluating and adopting new AI tools and practices, and coach other engineers to do the same.
  • Required: Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or have equivalent practical experience, along with 10+ years of.NET development experience building web applications.
  • Required: Have strong working knowledge of the Microsoft stack, including.NET Core, C, JavaScript, RESTful services, ORM, T-SQL, JSON, MVC, XML, HTML, and CSS.
  • Required: Have a strong design and architecture mindset, with experience building scalable, high-performance, secure enterprise applications on Azure or another public cloud.
  • Required: Be proficient in unit testing, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, microservices, and containerization with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Required: Have deep knowledge of sound coding practices, including unit testing, object-oriented design, and design patterns.
  • Required: Have comprehensive knowledge of RDBMS and NoSQL databases and advanced SQL, including stored procedures, indexes, functions, and triggers.
  • Required: Have experience with event-driven and messaging architectures, such as Kafka, Azure Service Bus, or Event Grid.
  • Required: Have thorough knowledge of Git and source control in continuous integration environments.
  • Required: Have hands-on experience with Agile methods such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Required: Have experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog, Application Insights, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Required: Communicate clearly in writing and speech, influence technical direction across teams, and explain technical topics to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Have experience in payments, fintech, or financial services, including familiarity with compliance frameworks such as PCI-DSS.
