Description

The company is hiring a controls and MES engineer to support a ground-up automation build at a major automotive manufacturer in Warren, Michigan.

This is a new-build development and implementation job, not sustaining or maintenance work.

You would design, program, integrate and commission controls and manufacturing systems, centred on Studio 5000, Ignition and PLC-to-MES links.

Ideal candidates have taken automation systems from first design through commissioning and production launch, and have built PLC, HMI/SCADA and MES functions themselves rather than only changing or fixing existing ones.

The company runs long-term projects on current technology to solve difficult customer problems, and its owners are directly reachable by staff.

Industry: automotive manufacturing. Role type: controls, automation and MES engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Write new ControlLogix and GuardLogix PLC programs from scratch in Studio 5000 or RSLogix 5000.
  • Build PLC structure covering ladder logic, tag layouts, UDTs, AOIs, sequencing, diagnostics, alarms and equipment interfaces.
  • Create Ignition HMI/SCADA applications with screens, tags, scripts, alarms, communications and system setup.
  • Build the communication between PLCs and MES, including transaction and handshake logic for production.
  • Handle work-order checks, part and serial traceability, recipe and model management, production reports and pass/fail records.
  • Connect barcode scanners, RFID readers and other production tracking equipment.
  • Set up Zebra industrial label printers and write the ZPL code they need.
  • Automate label printing triggered by production events, work orders and cycle completion.
  • Run controls startup, debugging, commissioning, FAT and SAT, and production launch.
  • Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, MES, network and equipment communication problems as they arise.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering, IT/MES, equipment integrators and plant staff throughout the project.
  • Keep controls documentation, system architecture, backups and commissioning records current.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on work with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix/GuardLogix and Studio 5000 or RSLogix 5000.
  • Proven record of writing PLC programs from scratch for equipment, stations or lines.
  • Hands-on experience with Inductive Automation Ignition.
  • Experience building Ignition screens, tags, scripts or application architecture.
  • Experience connecting PLCs to MES or other manufacturing information systems.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing transactions: work-order validation, traceability, recipes, production reporting and serial tracking.
  • Experience commissioning automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Solid troubleshooting across controls hardware, PLC software, industrial networks and production systems.
  • Experience in automotive or other high-volume discrete manufacturing.
  • Preferred: experience generating ZPL code and integrating Zebra industrial printers.
  • Preferred: experience with barcode and RFID-based production traceability.
  • Preferred: Ignition Vision and or Perspective development experience.
  • Preferred: industrial networking experience with Ethernet/IP, OPC UA, SQL or related communication technologies.
  • Preferred: experience taking a controls project through design, development, integration, startup, commissioning and production launch.
  • Preferred: bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, automation, industrial engineering or a related discipline.
