Senior Backend Engineer - Payin Platform

Description

A team in the company's recurring payin area runs the Direct Debit API, which handles automated payments into the company's accounts.

On top of that API, the team is building a platform that lets customers set up scheduled top-ups or collections from businesses.

The platform runs on the company's internal payin rails, a core part of its money movement system.

The main product is a set of APIs for partners who want automated funding or pre-authorized payments, such as recurring GBP balance top-ups or monthly EUR bill collection without a repeated customer flow.

The goal is to let customers grant a one-time pre-authorization so the company can pull funds from any payment method, including USD bank accounts and EUR issued bank cards.

The company is a global technology business that moves and manages money worldwide and is building a new network for the world's money.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test and maintain backend services in any language, deployed on AWS.
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs used by millions of customers on web and mobile.
• Develop and improve the services behind card payin, which lets customers move about £1 billion a month.
• Design database schemas and write and tune SQL queries against PostgreSQL databases with high transaction volumes.
• Build and maintain event-driven systems on Apache Kafka that process financial events asynchronously across distributed services.
• Develop and run a payment orchestration system that routes payments across Payment Service Providers to balance cost and reliability.
• Write unit, integration and end-to-end tests to keep financial systems correct and reliable.
• Review teammates' code for quality, security and adherence to engineering standards.
• Take part in on-call rotations to monitor and respond to production incidents on Tier 2 critical services.
• Work with product managers, designers, analysts and engineers from other teams on cross-functional projects.
• Find and fix performance bottlenecks, scaling problems and technical debt in existing systems.
• Make sure development follows security best practices, especially for sensitive financial data and financial regulations.

Conditions

You will join an on-call rotation for Tier 2 critical services.
