Description

The company is building a new generation surgical robotic platform, and this role leads the software and embedded architecture for its real-time, high-definition video, imaging, and intra-body illumination systems.

You will integrate cameras, image sensors, and vision pipelines into multi-processor embedded designs and make sound calls on trade-offs between hardware, software, algorithms, and procedure requirements.

Diagnosing vision problems from the optics and sensor through the video pipeline to the software is central to the role, and you will lead root cause work with hardware and algorithms teams. Experience in a regulated industry and with medical device design controls is a plus.

You will assess design options through detailed technical reviews, proof-of-concept builds, and fast iteration, turning rough requirements into solid embedded architectures.

You will work with a development and management team that understands the work and supports your success.

Responsibilities

  • Define the hardware, software, and algorithm architecture for the video processing engine, image sensors, and intra-body illumination of the platform, from concept through implementation.
  • Lead the integration of cameras, image sensors, and vision pipelines into multi-processor embedded systems, with reliable interfaces between hardware, FPGA/ISP, and software.
  • Compare embedded vision software architecture options through detailed technical reviews, proof-of-concept work, and rapid iteration.
  • Lead bring-up and integration of new high-performance cameras and image sensors, and the integration and evaluation of advanced camera pipeline video processing algorithms.
  • Diagnose vision issues end-to-end across sensor, optics, video pipeline, and software, leading root cause investigations with hardware, algorithms, and systems engineering teams.
  • Lead development and improvement of color and power control for intra-operative illumination.
  • Lead formal risk analyses for vision and illumination subsystems, identify extra hardware requirements, and build software mitigations that reduce potential failures.
  • Design and build offline simulation environments and hardware and software diagnostic tools that speed up development, debugging, and testing.
  • Lead or guide detailed design, development, documentation, and verification of embedded vision software and supervisory state machines, meeting regulatory requirements and the company's internal guidelines.
  • Work across the video and vision software stack, including extending current processing frameworks to new hardware platforms.
  • Apply advanced imaging and vision expertise to develop solutions that can be reused across multiple products.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on the vision team.

Requirements

  • Required: a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar technical field.
  • Required: at least 12 years developing and supporting embedded systems, with significant work on video, imaging, or vision systems (8 years with a Master's degree, or 5 years with a PhD).
  • Required: strong C/C++ skills for mission-critical, cross-platform embedded, real-time, Linux-based systems, including application and driver development for multi-core and multi-processor designs.
  • Required: deep experience integrating cameras, image sensors, and vision pipelines into complex embedded systems, including hardware, software, and algorithm interfaces.
  • Required: a proven record of diagnosing complex vision system problems through root cause investigation and close work with hardware and algorithms teams.
  • Required: a proven record of assessing embedded software architecture trade-offs through technical reviews, proof-of-concept work, and rapid iteration.
  • Required: direct experience with imaging devices such as cameras, light sensors, and video or graphics hardware, including sensor and camera bring-up, configuration, and integration.
  • Required: fluency in image-processing concepts, camera pipeline video processing algorithms, and video processing frameworks.
  • Required: working knowledge of Python or another scripting language for diagnostics, automation, and testing.
  • Required: hands-on experience across the full product development lifecycle, including design, documentation, implementation, debugging, verification, validation, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Preferred: knowledge of image processing, CUDA, ML, or FPGA integration, such as Vivado and other FPGA development tools.
  • Preferred: familiarity with communication protocols such as TCP/IP, CAN, and serialization protocols.
  • Preferred: experience designing software in a regulated industry or for mission-critical applications, with understanding of design input, design output, traceability, risk analysis, and mitigations.
  • Preferred: experience leading medical technology projects from inception through field validation to launch, with a strong grasp of the medical product ecosystem.
  • Preferred: familiarity with rapid development and rapid prototyping tools.
  • Preferred: proven ability to work with and mentor people at all levels.

Conditions

Proof of current vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19, may be required by the company or its customers, depending on the role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls for prospective employees who are nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions.

The company may need to obtain a U.S. export license, which can take 3 to 6+ months, or put a Technology Control Plan in place, which typically adds about 2 weeks to hiring.

For controlled roles, offers depend on an approved export license and/or an executed Technology Control Plan before the start date, and that timing may not be flexible.

Qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records will be considered under applicable fair chance laws.

Preference goes to qualified candidates who do not live, and do not plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, or Tennessee.

The job level may differ from the one listed, depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge, and skills.

Pay will be based mainly on the job level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, in line with applicable law.
