Revenue Engineering builds the platform that measures customer usage of the company's products and converts that measurement into usage and cost data customers can act on. All of the company's products are metered through this layer, and customers see usage by team, service, or business unit through it.
This Staff Product Manager role for Metering and Cost Attribution owns product direction for that platform and sets the standard for how usage is measured, attributed, and presented across the company.
The work begins with tagging, which customers use to assign usage to owners within their organization. Cost allocation, chargeback, quotas, and governance all depend on it. Beyond that, you will shape the metering capabilities that new pricing and packaging models rely on, and scale the platform's speed as the product portfolio grows. Over time you will own the vision and roadmap for a usage platform used by every internal team and relied on by every customer.
The usage layer is the system of record for consumption and the source for billing. You own the path from usage events to billable output, plus the consumption models, cost attribution, and usage analytics that customers and their finance teams use to understand spend. You will work closely with the billing platform team on that boundary.
Usage and cost attribution cover many billable metrics, several regions, and customers with parent and child organizations and reseller hierarchies. Results appear in units and dollars, in the app, through the API, and in agentic workflows. Good design here means deliberate tradeoffs in granularity, timeliness, and flexibility, applied consistently across all the teams that build on them.
This is an individual contributor role with high visibility. It spans several engineering teams, every product area that emits billable telemetry, and partners in Sales, Support, and Finance.
Responsibilities
Set product direction for metering and attribution, covering the problems and outcomes from usage events through billable output. Plan the platform's evolution over several quarters and work with multiple engineering teams to split the work into phases that deliver customer value early.
Own the tagging model as a product customers use directly. Provide one consistent way to define tags across all products, turn those tags into detailed usage and cost breakdowns wherever they appear, and design how customers adjust and recalculate attribution when their tags change.
Define the metering and rating capabilities that pricing and packaging depend on. Work ahead of launches on usage aggregation, unit definitions, commitments, included usage, and overage so the metering platform stays ahead of commercial needs.
Serve as the subject matter expert for metering and cost attribution. Set the standard product areas follow when they add a new SKU to usage attribution, align engineering, Cloud Cost Management, Support, Sales, and Finance on one cost allocation model, and mentor product managers who take on metering work in their areas.
Own the quality standard for usage data. Turn customer needs for accuracy, timeliness, and auditability into product requirements and service objectives. Keep measured usage, attribution, and billing consistent with each other, and produce the sizing and impact analysis that engineering leaders and pricing partners need to staff the work.
Build agentic capabilities on top of usage. Detect unexpected changes in consumption early, explain which teams and services caused them, and recommend next steps for the customer. Own the data contracts and interfaces that let agents across the company reason about usage.
Track how FinOps practice, cloud provider primitives, and specialist vendors are changing in cost allocation and cost governance. Shape the company's investment in response, and engage customers directly through preview programs, design partnerships, and industry forums.
Requirements
Think as a systems thinker. Trace cause and effect from telemetry intake through metering, aggregation, attribution, and the bill. Reason about unit economics and cost-to-serve alongside customer experience, and keep the overall direction steady as scope changes across quarters.
Be fluent in data models and pipelines. Understand event pipelines, usage aggregation, cardinality, deduplication, backfills, and processing latency, and how each one limits what a customer can be shown.
Synthesize across the organization. Read signals from engineering teams, Support, Sales, Finance, and product areas, and turn them into a position you can defend.
Hold quality as a personal product standard for usage and cost data, and know how to weigh quality investment against new capability.
Be collaborative and opinionated. Build trust quickly with engineers, PM peers, designers, and commercial partners. Influence senior stakeholders without formal authority, and change your view when new evidence appears.
Have 8+ years of product management experience, or a record of Staff-level work in related software roles with substantial ownership of complex technical products. Be comfortable with ambiguity and broad platform scope that takes shape over several quarters.
Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Have experience with high-cardinality telemetry and the cost and pricing tradeoffs it creates.
Have experience with usage-based or consumption-based monetization, including metering, rating, and cost allocation.
Be familiar with usage-based billing systems such as Metronome, Orb, m3ter, Amberflo, Zuora, or Stripe Billing, or with FinOps tools such as CloudZero, Vantage, or Finout.
Have owned a platform capability used by many internal product teams, including the adoption and onboarding work that comes with it.
Have experience with pricing and packaging, and be comfortable reasoning about margin and cost-to-serve when packaging changes.
Know the FinOps Foundation framework or the FOCUS specification, and have worked with chargeback, showback, and tag governance at enterprise scale.
