Description

The company is Europe's largest online pharmacy and serves millions of customers across Europe. You would join the Retail Transaction domain as a Staff Software Engineer, leading two engineering teams that own one of the most important customer journeys, the checkout.

You would help shape how checkout develops across web, backend and, increasingly, native mobile apps, while aligning work with payments, orders and shipping.

Tech stack: React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud and Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Set architecture direction for the Transaction domain, guiding two teams and connected domains and designing scalable distributed systems across frontend and backend.
  • Lead complex architecture decisions and weigh performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost using data, accepting pragmatic trade-offs. Spot risks that reach beyond a single team.
  • Stay hands-on in frontend and backend, building customer-facing features in React and scalable backend services in Java. Take part from early discovery and system design through to production.
  • Help lay the groundwork for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
  • Push architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability practices across several teams. Turn recurring technical problems into reusable patterns, guidelines and platform features with engineering leads and specialist teams.
  • Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and other dependent teams where ownership and priorities overlap. Mentor engineers, lead architecture and design discussions, and give technical direction without relying on formal authority.
  • Work with Product, UX and engineering leadership to find opportunities, question assumptions and turn business needs into a long-term technical strategy. Use metrics and industry trends to compare options, prioritise high-impact work and decide when to evolve existing systems or adopt new technology.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on frontend experience with React and TypeScript, plus professional backend experience in at least one language or framework such as Node.js, Java or Python.
  • Comfortable working across the full stack, contributing to production backend services and APIs, and owning customer-facing applications.
  • Experience at Staff or Principal level, or equivalent technical scope, designing complex systems and driving architecture decisions that affect several teams or domains.
  • Senior engineers come to you for input, and you can build technical agreement when requirements, constraints and opinions conflict.
  • A proven track record of leading through influence and developing other engineers. You can mentor experienced engineers, run architecture discussions, introduce standards and enable teams to make strong decisions without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Strong business and product judgement together with technical depth. You work well with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders, use metrics and evidence to decide, and think about what is best for the wider organisation.
  • Strong plus: experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems.
  • Valuable: exposure to native Android with Kotlin or iOS with Swift, as the domain is moving in that direction.

Conditions

Remote position based in Germany.

May require occasional on-site work at the Berlin or Cologne offices, depending on business and team needs.

Benefits

  • Urban Sports Club membership, M package, for access to a wide range of sports offers.
  • Work from home: where the role does not need an office presence, the work location can be arranged individually, including up to 20 days a year from anywhere in the EU.
  • Fully paid Deutschland Ticket usable at any time.
  • Support for personal development through internal and external training.
  • 30 days paid holiday per year, plus an extra day on Rosenmontag, and the option of up to 10 days unpaid leave after one year with the company.
  • 10% employee discount on over-the-counter, beauty and personal care products in the online store, and 20% discount on a separate brand sold by the company.
