Description

You will design software systems that run on several platform types, which includes writing and running test plans and building test scripts and tools.

You find, diagnose and fix software defects and performance bottlenecks through structured troubleshooting.

You work with stakeholders to pin down system requirements and build a sound architecture that meets business goals within technical limits.

You build deeper knowledge of how computing systems integrate and advise on software and hardware configurations and changes.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools.
  • Design small enhancements, updates and code changes for parts and subsystems of systems software, such as operating systems, compilers, networking, utilities, databases and Internet tools.
  • Review designs and decide which coding, programming and integration work is needed to reach set goals and project guidelines.
  • Run and write parts of test plans, protocols and documentation for your assigned application area, then find and debug code problems and propose fixes or improvements.
  • Join concept design discussions, collect system-level requirements, clarify interfaces and feed back input that shapes future designs for reliable, high-performance solutions.
  • Help improve each service across its full lifecycle, from inception and design through deployment, operation and refinement.
  • Provide support such as system design consulting, building software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning and launch reviews.
  • Work on a project team with other software systems engineers and internal and outsourced development partners to deliver reliable, cost-effective, high-quality solutions for your assigned part of a system.
  • Keep internal and outsourced partners informed on design status, progress and issue resolution.
  • Produce conclusions, recommendations and written reports, support research and data analysis, and share knowledge with the team.

Requirements

  • Recommended: a four-year or graduate degree in computer science, information systems or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience or proven competence.
  • Typically 2-4 years of work experience, preferably in systems engineering, programming or a related field, or an advanced degree with little or no work experience.
  • Preferred certifications: Certified Software Systems Engineer (CSSE) or Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP).
  • Knowledge and skills: Agile methodology, Amazon Web Services, application programming interfaces (API), automation, C++, computer science, debugging, Docker, full stack development, Java, JavaScript, Kubernetes, Linux, microservices, Microsoft Azure, Python, scalability, software development, software engineering and SQL.
  • Cross-organization skills: effective communication, results orientation, learning agility, digital fluency and customer centricity.
  • Impact and scope: you affect your immediate team, analyse information as an informed team member and give limited input on project direction.
  • Complexity: you handle routine issues within established guidelines.
