Software Engineer, SRE

Description

You will join as a Site Reliability Engineer and help improve the reliability, observability and performance of systems, while assisting with incident resolution and promoting good practice.

You will treat reliability and observability as software problems, keeping critical systems available and performing well as they grow.

The company is one of the world's largest online gambling businesses, founded in 2000 by Denise Coates CBE. It employs more than 10,000 people, serves over 120 million customers in 26 languages, and leads the market in In-Play betting with more than 1.38 million In-Play sporting events a year.

At peak, the platform runs over 750 concurrent sporting fixtures, streams more live sport than any other company in Europe (750,000), handles over 6 million HTTP requests a day and processes more than 1.5 million bets an hour.

Responsibilities

• Build solutions that improve reliability, including instrumenting services with OpenTelemetry and improving logging.
• Use AI tools and LLM platforms in your daily work to cut toil, support autonomous operations and keep systems healthy.
• Engineer automation and tooling for managing services.
• Work with multiple functions to build reliability and observability into each stage of the software development lifecycle, so systems meet user demand.
• Develop and maintain tools that keep systems efficient and resilient to operate.
• Write code and contribute to it for telemetry, operational APIs and tooling that make services more reliable and observable.
• Use automation and orchestration platforms to automate manual work and reduce toil.
• Build detailed dashboards from varied telemetry data using Grafana, Splunk and New Relic.
• Take part in live incident response and post-mortem reviews, recommending fixes that improve system health and prevent repeat issues.
• Lead work that improves reliability and observability and keeps the team improving continuously.
• Maintain and run the existing monitoring and analytics toolsets.
• Coach colleagues in new technologies and practices.
• Work with IT Operations to provide and support critical tooling that adds more value to the business.

Requirements

• Strong skills in Python, Golang and JavaScript.
• Working knowledge of modern software development methods and lifecycles.
• Deep understanding of SRE principles, including defining and managing effective SLIs and SLOs for reliability and customer satisfaction.
• Working knowledge of current observability tools and practices, including Splunk, New Relic, Grafana and PagerDuty.
• Hands-on shell scripting for automation and system management.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and orchestration tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
• Prior experience in a large-scale, 24/7 enterprise where uptime and stability are critical to the business.
• An AI-first approach to engineering, with hands-on use of LLM platforms and coding assistants to raise productivity and quality, and the ability to use AI-driven telemetry for advanced observability, predictive insights and root-cause analysis.
