The company is building the data platforms behind its next-generation Software-Defined Vehicle, where data supports safety, personalization, energy optimization, operational decisions and connected customer experiences.
The team needs a Staff Engineer to make these platforms reliable, observable, operable and scalable. This senior technical leadership role spans system design, production operations, incident response, automation and work with customers.
You will set and spread engineering patterns that make services easier to run. You will work with SRE, data engineering, infrastructure, developer experience, application and product teams to improve reliability from design through production and to refine how the organization operates.
This is an existing vacancy, open to new applications, and is a backfill.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and build of scalable, fault-tolerant, observable infrastructure for vehicle telemetry, data ingestion and platform operations.
Lead production readiness across several teams. Write code yourself, set reliability standards, guide architecture, and make sure applications launch with resilient deployments, strong observability and predictable operations.
Design, build and improve CI/CD pipelines so releases are repeatable, safe, observable and fast, including quality gates, artifact promotion, deployment verification, progressive delivery and rollback practices.
Work with SRE, product and application teams to define and implement useful SLOs, SLIs, observability, monitoring, alerting, runbooks and operating practices.
Build and improve reusable AI workflows, skills and evaluations, using regression testing, structured evaluations and LLM-as-a-judge methods where they fit.
Automate operational tasks such as incident intake, triage, diagnostics, remediation, evidence collection, service requests and customer-facing status updates.
Join a weekly on-call rotation of 12-hour shifts that cycles every 8 weeks. Lead incident response, communicate clearly under pressure and coordinate mitigation and recovery.
Take part in post-incident reviews and push for lasting system-level fixes instead of short-term patches or repeated manual workarounds.
Work directly with internal customers to understand their needs, explain technical trade-offs and improve service outcomes with tact, empathy and clear communication.
Shape technical direction across teams, mentor engineers and raise standards through design reviews, code reviews, documentation and hands-on work on cross-functional projects.
Weigh reliability, performance, security, delivery speed and cost when making technical decisions, especially under pressure.
Requirements
8+ years in SRE, DevOps or systems engineering, including managing or mentoring high-impact teams.
Proven record designing, building and maintaining high-scale, cloud-native production systems, ideally on Azure, AWS or GCP.
Hands-on experience designing observability, including standard instrumentation, OpenTelemetry collector configuration, SLO and SLI definitions, and deploying monitors, alerts and dashboards.
Solid grasp of production readiness, service ownership, SLOs, incident management, post-incident learning and ongoing reliability work.
Experience in on-call rotations and leading technical response to production incidents.
Experience designing, running and improving CI/CD pipelines. You are expected to understand GitOps, release strategies, quality gates, deployment verification, progressive delivery and safe rollback.
Strong programming skills in Python, Go, Java or a similar language, with disciplined code review, version control, testing and maintainability habits.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development, LLM application practices, agentic workflows and evaluation techniques.
Able to work with internal customers, including in difficult or high-pressure situations, with professionalism, tact and empathy.
Strong ownership, with pace, judgment and accountability in a fast-moving environment.
Able to influence without formal authority and drive adoption of shared engineering patterns.
Strong written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
BS, MS or PhD in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or another relevant technical field.
Preferred: experience with Azure Databricks, Azure Event Hubs and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
Preferred: Kubernetes configuration management with Helm and Kustomize.
Preferred: infrastructure as code, especially Terraform.
Preferred: GitHub Actions, Argo CD and GitOps-based deployment models.
Preferred: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry or comparable observability platforms and tools.
Preferred: LLM application development and testing with Promptfoo, agentic workflows and reusable AI skills with CoPilot.
Preferred: operating large-scale data ingestion, processing and delivery systems such as Fivetran, Apache Flink, Kafka and Pulsar.
Preferred: vehicle telemetry, connected-vehicle platforms or other high-volume event-driven systems.
