The company is building the next generation of its Software-Defined Vehicle platform, where data supports safety, personalization, energy optimization, operational decisions and connected customer experiences.
The team needs a Staff Engineer to make the company's data platforms reliable, observable, operable and scalable. This is a senior technical leadership role that spans system design, production operations, incident response, automation and work with internal customers.
You will set and spread engineering patterns that make services easier to run, working with SRE, data engineering, infrastructure, developer experience, application and product teams to improve reliability from design through production.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and build of scalable, fault-tolerant, observable infrastructure for vehicle telemetry, data ingestion and platform operations.
Lead production readiness across several teams, writing code yourself, setting reliability standards, guiding architecture, and making sure applications ship with resilient deployments, strong observability and predictable operations.
Design, build and improve CI/CD pipelines so releases are repeatable, safe, observable and fast. Set quality gates, artifact promotion, deployment verification, progressive delivery and rollback practices.
Work with SRE, product and application teams to design SLOs, SLIs, observability, monitoring, alerting, runbooks and operating practices.
Build and improve reusable AI workflows, skills and evaluations, using regression tests, structured evaluations and LLM-as-a-judge methods where they fit.
Automate operational work such as incident intake, triage, diagnostics, remediation, evidence collection, service requests and customer-facing status updates.
Take part in a weekly on-call rotation of 12-hour shifts that repeats every eight weeks. Lead incident response, communicate clearly under pressure, and coordinate mitigation and recovery.
Join post-incident reviews and drive system-level fixes that stop problems from recurring, instead of short-term patches or repeated manual workarounds.
Work directly with internal customers to understand their needs, explain technical trade-offs, and improve service outcomes with tact, empathy and clear communication.
Shape technical direction across teams, mentor engineers, and raise standards through design reviews, code reviews, documentation and hands-on work on cross-functional projects.
Weigh reliability, performance, security, delivery speed and cost in technical decisions, especially under pressure.
Requirements
8+ years in SRE, DevOps or systems engineering, including managing or mentoring high-impact teams.
A track record of designing, building and running high-scale, cloud-native systems in production, ideally on Azure, AWS or GCP.
Hands-on experience designing observability, including standard instrumentation, OpenTelemetry collector configuration, SLO and SLI definitions, and deploying monitors, alerts and dashboards.
Solid understanding of production readiness, service ownership, SLOs, incident management, post-incident learning and continuous reliability work.
Experience on an on-call rotation and leading the technical response to production incidents.
Experience designing, running and improving CI/CD pipelines. You must understand GitOps, release strategies, quality gates, deployment verification, progressive delivery and safe rollback.
Strong programming skills in Python, Go, Java or a similar language, with disciplined code review, version control, testing and maintainability habits.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development, LLM application practices, agentic workflows and evaluation techniques.
Ability to work well with internal customers in difficult or high-pressure situations, with professionalism, tact and empathy.
A strong sense of ownership, with the pace, judgment and accountability to operate in a high-velocity environment.
Ability to influence people without formal authority and to drive adoption of shared engineering patterns.
Clear written and verbal communication for both technical and non-technical audiences.
A BS, MS or PhD in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or another relevant technical field.
Preferred: Azure Databricks.
Preferred: Azure Event Hubs.
Preferred: Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
Preferred: Kubernetes configuration management with Helm and Kustomize.
Preferred: infrastructure as code, especially Terraform.
Preferred: GitHub Actions, Argo CD and GitOps-based deployment models.
Preferred: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry or comparable observability platforms and tools.
Preferred: LLM application development and testing with Promptfoo, agentic workflows and reusable AI skills with CoPilot.
Preferred: experience running large-scale data ingestion, processing and delivery systems such as Fivetran, Apache Flink, Kafka and Pulsar.
Preferred: experience with vehicle telemetry, connected-vehicle platforms or other high-volume event-driven systems.
Conditions
The role is hybrid: you are expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week, or as your manager sets.
The company does not offer immigration sponsorship for this role. Do not apply if you will need immigration sponsorship from GM now or later, including employer-of-record filings or any work authorization that needs a written submission or other immigration support from the company, such as H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN or J-1.
The company is an equal-opportunity employer, and candidates may be asked to complete a role-related assessment or a pre-employment screening before starting.
Benefits
Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
You will help shape the reliability foundations of the company's next generation of connected, software-defined vehicles, working on large-scale systems and helping define how modern SRE teams use automation, observability, operational discipline and AI.
