Description

The company builds humanoid robots and has a flagship humanoid robot called Apollo, designed to work alongside people, starting in manufacturing and logistics, with later uses in healthcare and the home.

The company runs much of its own infrastructure: Kubernetes clusters on bare metal and in the public cloud, plus the CI/CD and observability systems behind each robot software release. The engineering team is growing along with the robot fleet.

This senior role manages and scales the DevOps platform, with the aim of making it more resilient, faster to build on and safer to change. You take ownership from architecture decisions down to the Linux kernel, network and disk when something goes wrong. The team wants a hands-on engineer who designs systems to be reliable from the start and keeps investigating until the cause is clear.

Responsibilities

  • Run and grow the Kubernetes platform across bare metal, virtual machines and the public cloud, covering cluster provisioning, networking, storage and upgrades.
  • Build the CI/CD infrastructure robotics engineers ship with, including build runners, remote build execution and caching, container registries, and autoscaling that adds capacity on-prem or in the cloud as demand shifts.
  • Design for failure with backups, multi-site recovery and recovery drills that show the company can keep running if a data center goes offline.
  • Make releases safe with GitOps delivery, progressive rollouts and automatic rollback when a release fails health checks.
  • Choose what to measure, define SLIs and SLOs for the platform, and build the monitoring and alerting around them.
  • Investigate production problems from Kubernetes down to the Linux kernel, network and disk, and fix root causes so they stay fixed.
  • Manage infrastructure as code with tools such as Terraform, Helm and Ansible, and write Go or Python tooling that removes manual work.
  • Build security into the platform, including single sign-on, role-based access, certificate and secret management, and minimal, patched operating systems.
  • Work with robotics software teams on architecture and production readiness, and set standards other teams follow.
  • Plan capacity and cost across on-prem and cloud as the fleet and team grow.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of Linux internals, including the networking stack, file systems, process and resource management, and performance tuning.
  • Experience building and upgrading production Kubernetes clusters and debugging networking, storage or scheduling failures.
  • Comfortable working in a shell with tools such as strace, tcpdump, ss and perf.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and GitOps using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Helm and Argo CD.
  • Strong Go or Python skills, with experience building tools and services rather than only scripts.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, load balancing, VLANs and BGP.
  • Ability to decide what to measure, alert on it and set SLOs.
  • Designs systems with failure modes in mind before building them.
  • Keeps digging until the root cause is understood, and stays calm during an outage.
  • Sets priorities well, works independently and finishes what is started.
  • Preferred: experience with hybrid infrastructure, including on-prem bare metal, virtualization, SAN or NAS storage and at least one public cloud.
  • Preferred: experience building and running CI/CD and build infrastructure at scale, such as remote build execution, container build optimization and runner autoscaling.
  • Preferred: experience with immutable, API-managed operating systems for Kubernetes nodes and with eBPF-based networking.
  • Preferred: experience running container registries with replication and caching across sites.
  • Preferred: experience planning disaster recovery and running recovery drills.
  • Preferred: experience running infrastructure on both x86-64 and ARM.
  • Preferred: experience with infrastructure for robotics, embedded systems or IoT device fleets.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years in site reliability engineering, DevOps or infrastructure engineering, with a focus on hybrid cloud.
  • A track record of building infrastructure from scratch and running it reliably in production.
  • Physical requirements: long periods sitting at a desk using a computer, occasionally lifting 15 pounds, good vision for printed material and screens, and the ability to hear and speak to communicate.
