Software Engineer, SRE

Description

This is a Site Reliability Engineer role focused on the reliability, observability and performance of critical systems, approached as a software problem.

The company is a leading online gambling business, operating since 2000 and employing over 10,000 people.

It serves over 120 million customers in 26 languages and is known for its In-Play betting, with more than 1.38 million In-Play sporting events a year.

At peak, the platform has over 750 concurrent sporting fixtures and handles more than 1.5 million bets per hour, plus over 6 million HTTP requests a day.

The company streams more live sport than any other European operator, at 750,000 streams.

You will work across many functions to build reliability and observability into the software development life cycle and help the teams keep up with user demand.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain tools that make systems easier to manage, efficient to run and resilient to failure.
• Write code and contribute to services that improve reliability and observability, including telemetry, operational APIs and tooling.
• Instrument services with OpenTelemetry and improve logging practices.
• Automate manual work and reduce toil using automation and orchestration platforms.
• Use AI tools and LLM platforms in daily work to cut toil, support autonomous operations and improve system health.
• Build detailed dashboards from a range of telemetry data using Grafana, Splunk and New Relic.
• Take part in live incident response and post-mortem reviews, and recommend fixes that improve system health and prevent repeat issues.
• Lead work that raises reliability and observability standards and keeps improving how the team operates.
• Run and maintain existing monitoring and analytics tools.
• Mentor colleagues in new technologies and practices.
• Work with IT Operations to provide and support critical tooling that adds more value to the business.

Requirements

• Strong skills in Python, Go and JavaScript.
• Experience with modern software development methods and lifecycles.
• A deep understanding of SRE principles, including defining and managing SLIs and SLOs for reliability and customer satisfaction.
• Working knowledge of current observability tools and practices, including Splunk, New Relic, Grafana and PagerDuty.
• Proficient in shell scripting for automation and system administration.
• Experience with infrastructure as code and orchestration tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
• Prior experience in a large, 24/7 enterprise where uptime and stability are critical to the business.
• An AI-first way of working, with hands-on use of LLM platforms and coding assistants to raise productivity and quality, and the ability to use AI-driven telemetry for advanced observability, predictive insights and root-cause analysis.
