Description

This is a hybrid role that requires two days per week in the office.

The company, part of Booking Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), serves millions of diners and more than 70,000 restaurant partners, with over 25 years in the business. The company builds technology that helps restaurants run well and lets diners find and book places for any occasion.

Employees have real influence on the company's work, and you will join a global team spread across a portfolio of metasearch brands.

You will be a Site Reliability Engineer II on the Serving Platforms team in Infrastructure Engineering. The job is to design, automate and run the core container stack and infrastructure behind the company's global business applications. The environment is high-scale and self-hosted, and you will act as the subject matter expert for Kubernetes, Linux systems and cloud-native automation, improving reliability, security and efficiency. You will work with engineering teams around the world, lead greenfield infrastructure projects, handle complex incidents and build self-service tools for application developers.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the low-level Linux operating system and the Kubernetes control plane running reliably and tuned on self-hosted bare-metal infrastructure.
  • Design, build and maintain scalable container management, configuration management and automation tools across environments worldwide.
  • Investigate and fix complex outages and performance bottlenecks, down to the system call level, and carry out root-cause analysis.
  • Take part in high-impact platform projects and work with distributed engineering teams to standardise infrastructure.
  • Join the on-call rotation to support critical production systems.
  • Build and maintain self-service tools, automation pipelines and infrastructure monitoring that remove manual operational work.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on Linux experience (for example Ubuntu or CentOS), including kernel tuning with sysctl, process management with cgroups and namespaces, system calls and performance optimisation.
  • At least 3 years of production experience with configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible or SaltStack.
  • Proven experience building, operating and troubleshooting bare-metal Kubernetes clusters from scratch, including the control plane, etcd and CNI plugin management.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills in languages such as Go, Python, Ruby, Perl or Bash.
  • Demonstrated experience responding to live service disruptions, leading root-cause analysis and running messaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ in production.
  • Nice to have: experience operating, scaling and monitoring AI/ML or LLM-powered services under high concurrency in production.
  • Nice to have: hands-on work with a public cloud provider (AWS, GCE or Azure) and containerised CI/CD pipelines (for example GitHub, Jenkins, CircleCI or Docker).
  • Nice to have: experience with distributed key-value stores such as Consul, etcd, Zookeeper or Redis, and with observability and alerting tools such as Prometheus or Sensu.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with server virtualisation platforms such as Proxmox, VMware, Xen or OpenStack, and with low-level networking such as IPtables, NFTables, routing and load balancing.
  • Nice to have: experience building and maintaining OS-level packages (RPM or DEB) and working in globally distributed software engineering teams.
  • This posting is for an existing vacancy.
