Description

The role is an open vacancy for a Staff Engineer who will look after the web platform used by diners.

The company is part of a publicly traded parent group and runs a portfolio of metasearch brands. It serves millions of diners and more than 70,000 restaurant partners, and has been operating for over 25 years.

You will be a hands-on technical leader who can work through hard problems in depth, set strategic direction, and help shape the shared platform over time.

The team values clean code, sound engineering practice, and fast, continuous delivery of product. You should enjoy hard engineering problems and keep quality high in an agile setting. A love of restaurants is a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor team members, building a collaborative and creative team culture.
  • Build relationships with other teams so that architecture and technical direction stay sound as the platform grows.
  • Design, build, and maintain fast, scalable web applications using Node.js, React, Redux, Fastify, GraphQL, and TypeScript.
  • Create and maintain developer tooling such as build automation, code generation, linting, formatting, and test frameworks.
  • Talk with engineers across teams to learn where they struggle, then build fixes that make their work smoother and more productive.
  • Help refine development processes, best practices, and coding standards so every team works in a consistent, efficient way.
  • Help build and run infrastructure components including Docker, Grafana, and the ELK Stack.
  • Write clean, well-tested, well-documented code that follows agreed practice.
  • Review colleagues' code and give useful, constructive feedback.
  • Diagnose and fix problems promptly and efficiently.
  • Keep up with new technologies and industry trends.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of web development experience, ideally with Node.js, React, Redux, and TypeScript.
  • Strong technical leadership.
  • Clear communication and the ability to work well with others.
  • Solid grasp of front-end technology including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Back-end development experience with Node.js, Fastify, and GraphQL.
  • Working familiarity with containerisation tools such as Docker.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools such as StatsD, Grafana, and the ELK Stack.
  • Fluency with version control systems such as Git.
  • A firm understanding of software development workflows, processes, and best practices.
  • Nice to have: experience with localisation and translation systems.
  • Nice to have: experience with build tools such as Esbuild, SWC, Webpack, or similar.
  • Nice to have: experience with developer tooling such as ESBuild, ESLint, Prettier, Jest, or Cypress.
  • Nice to have: knowledge of PostgreSQL or MongoDB.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Nice to have: contributions to open-source projects.
  • Nice to have: a passion for languages.

Conditions

The role is hybrid and requires coming into the office two days per week, which the company sees as the right balance of in-person collaboration and flexibility.

Your schedule must cover a global workforce across several time zones. Most work falls in normal business hours, but you may sometimes need to handle calls, Slack messages, or emails outside those hours to work with international colleagues, restaurant partners, or urgent issues. Local laws and regulations are always respected.

Pay is set by a range that depends on market benchmarks, location, and the experience required.

The company welcomes people from all backgrounds. Ask your recruiter for accommodations during the application, interview, or on the job.

Benefits

  • Work from almost anywhere for up to 20 days per year.
  • Company-paid therapy sessions through SpringHealth and a company-paid Headspace subscription.
  • An annual company-wide week off, so the whole team can recharge and come back without a backlog.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Generous paid vacation, plus time off for your birthday.
  • Paid time to volunteer.
  • Development Dollars, leadership development, and access to thousands of on-demand e-learning courses.
  • Travel discounts and employee resource groups.
  • 20 days of paid time off, including sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, floating holidays, and paid holidays.
  • Private health and dental insurance, plus life and disability insurance.
  • A competitive base salary, flexible spending account, retirement benefits, and parental leave.
  • The role is eligible for an annual bonus and an equity grant.
