Description

The role sits in the Services organization's technical writing team, where you will work both as an independent contributor and as a leader. You will develop, deliver and maintain Field Service documentation, combining hands-on writing with setting documentation standards, mentoring junior writers and contractors, and pushing ongoing improvements to documentation processes and quality.

Success here depends on your ability to pull complex technical information out of systems, subject matter experts, field demonstrations and lab environments on your own. Sound technical judgment and strong communication keep documentation accurate, clear and usable as business needs change, while staying within company guidelines.

This is an on-campus role. You will be in the office and the lab at least 3 days a week, and lab access is essential to doing the job well.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, write, edit and maintain Field Service procedures for medical device systems, applying your own technical judgment.
  • Gather technical requirements yourself through systems review, lab demonstrations, engineering consultations and field observation, rather than waiting for engineers to supply finished content.
  • Set and maintain documentation standards, style guides, templates and best practices, and refine processes to raise team productivity and quality.
  • Mentor and coach junior writers and contractors by giving technical feedback, reviewing their documentation and supporting their development.
  • Complete documentation control steps to release final documents, tracking work in JIRA and keeping Change Order records.
  • Work with product, engineering, training and field service teams so documentation meets end-to-end needs and fits company goals and quality standards.
  • Assess and propose improvements to processes, tooling and workflows, and lead or join documentation infrastructure initiatives.
  • Build and keep up your knowledge of the company Surgical hardware systems so you can explain complex engineering concepts to field audiences.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of technical writing experience on complex hardware or medical device products, covering installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Proven ability to learn mechanical systems independently through direct investigation and lab or field demonstrations.
  • Hands-on skill in minimalist hardware documentation using DITA XML tools such as Oxygen XML Editor or an equivalent.
  • Writing samples that show technical depth, minimalist principles and clear explanation of complex concepts.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, with the ability to understand, validate and convey complex scientific and engineering concepts accurately.
  • Solid project management skills, including juggling several projects on tight deadlines and helping others run their projects.
  • Working knowledge of current Adobe tools (Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) for documentation graphics.
  • Medical device industry experience is required. Field service or customer-facing documentation experience is strongly preferred.
  • An ownership mindset with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Engineering or a related field is required.

Conditions

The company and its customers may require proof of current vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19. Requirements can vary by role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls, which may affect prospective employees who are nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions. The company may need to obtain a U.S. government export license (which can take 3 to 6+ months) or put a Technology Control Plan in place (typically adding 2 weeks to hiring). Any offer is contingent on an approved license and/or executed plan before the start date, where applicable.

The company will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in line with fair chance laws.

The role may be filled at a different job level depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge and skills. Pay is based mainly on the level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, consistent with applicable law.
