Description

The company is a team of senior engineers who work through complex problems together, discussing architecture, technology and design patterns. The team builds the internal tools and architecture for the web channel, enabling product teams while also changing how the group works. The shared focus is solving problems for the company's customers on its website.

The team has 7-10 senior engineers and consultants.

Who you will work with:

Engineering Manager: you share responsibility for technical strategy, business alignment and team direction.

Senior engineers: you mentor them and help shape their growth.

Product and backend teams: you agree on requirements and architectural approaches with them.

Platform team: they build your architectural designs and own the tooling.

Engineers across the company: you shape architectural direction across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • This is a senior tech lead role on the Web Foundation team, which is the core architecture team for the company's web channel. You will bring deep frontend and web architecture expertise, with strong depth in React, TypeScript, Next.js and Node.js.
  • As the company's strategy moves toward personalization and modernization, architecture choices carry more weight. You will work with the Engineering Manager and the team to decide the next steps for the architecture, add new capabilities and build patterns that let teams ship independently at scale. You will lead technically with autonomy while keeping in step with business and team goals.
  • Your day-to-day work includes the following:
  • Set technical priorities with the Engineering Manager and the team, tied to business needs such as personalization, modernization and performance. Guide architectural decisions and hard technical problems.
  • Decide the direction for React and Next.js, the build system, performance work and design system patterns. Make calls on middleware layers, component architecture and performance trade-offs.
  • Review code thoroughly and give feedback that helps engineers grow. Set the quality bar and help the team reason about architecture.
  • Lead prototypes and proofs of concept for new approaches such as App Router, Suspense, RSCs, Server Components and new tooling. Judge them critically and help the team decide whether to adopt them.
  • Write code yourself: prototype, debug, test architectural ideas and document decisions.
  • Align teams on middleware design, API contracts and cross-team concerns with backend, platform and security architects. Explain technical direction clearly and handle trade-offs.

Requirements

  • You have 8-10+ years as a software engineer, including proven experience leading teams and making architectural decisions.
  • You have led initiatives and worked as a tech lead, owning work and setting technical direction.
  • You have substantial experience building or refactoring large-scale web platforms, such as ecommerce, SaaS, fintech or similar.
  • You have deep expertise in frontend and web architecture, including component composition, state management, performance optimization, bundler configuration (Webpack, Rollup, esbuild) and code splitting.
  • You communicate well and manage stakeholders, explaining technical ideas to engineers, product and leadership.
  • You work well across organizational boundaries and handle cross-team dynamics.
  • You are curious about new technologies, evaluate them critically and test them through prototypes.
  • You have deep proficiency in React.js, Next.js, TypeScript and Node.js, and have shipped production code in all four.
  • You have shipped code optimized for performance and have debugged issues across the stack, including bundle size, Core Web Vitals, network waterfalls and rendering.
  • You have led or shaped architectural decisions and written RFCs, design docs or architectural decision records.
  • You have deep knowledge of how SEO, accessibility (a11y) and performance affect user experience.
  • You have experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern testing frameworks such as Jest and React Testing Library.
  • Nice to have: experience designing and shipping middleware layers, including API contracts, caching strategies and error handling.
  • Nice to have: experience with Azure or a similar cloud platform.
  • Nice to have: experience building AI-assisted tools or agents.
  • Nice to have: experience shipping security-sensitive code and understanding backend authentication and authorization patterns.
  • Working style you bring:
  • You review code and mentor through feedback, setting the bar for quality and helping engineers learn.
  • You find root causes before proposing solutions.
  • You explain trade-offs and decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You document decisions that matter through RFCs, design docs and architectural decision records.
  • You test assumptions with prototypes before committing.
  • You care about performance, help teams prioritize it and drive improvements.
  • You help the team prioritize and make trade-off decisions, and clear blockers.
  • You share what you learn by documenting explorations and helping the team grow.
  • You lead by example, writing code, following your own standards and owning outcomes.
  • You raise issues early and keep decisions documented.
  • You know when to move fast and when to build for long-term health.
  • You are curious, enjoy architecture and hard problems, and want to understand how systems work.
  • You dig until you understand and do not settle for surface answers.
  • You enjoy learning and sharing new technologies with your team.
  • You are a strong team player who listens actively and helps keep the team positive.
  • You value diverse perspectives and backgrounds and work with your team toward the company's customers.
