Data Engineer

Description

The role sits in the Data service vertical of the Enterprise Technology team, which is led by the CTO for Enterprise Technology and is responsible for the full life cycle of around 140 applications.

The team is headed by a Head of Data Engineering and the role reports to the Lead Data Engineer.

The company is a diversified international insurance group listed on the London Stock Exchange, headquartered in Bermuda with most group leadership in London. It has over 3,000 staff across 14 countries and 34 offices.

The group operates through London Market, Reinsurance and Insurance Linked Securities (ILS), and Retail, which covers the company USA, the company UK and the company Europe.

For the financial year 2022, gross written premiums reached $4.425m and net premiums earned reached $2.928m.

Responsibilities

• Take business requirements and work with colleagues to estimate and design end-to-end solutions.
• Build and maintain ETL solutions on GCP using Python and SQL, and on SQL Server using SSIS and T-SQL.
• Work on data warehousing at scale across cloud and on-premise environments.
• Apply data warehouse development practices, including code and configuration management and build processes.
• Deliver through Agile methods, with CI/CD pipelines that automate deployments across data platforms.

Requirements

• A development background with exposure to data warehousing at scale, on cloud and on-premise.
• Experience building ETL solutions in GCP with Python and SQL, and in SQL Server with SSIS and T-SQL.
• Exposure to data warehouse development practices, including code and configuration management and build processes.
• A solid understanding of enterprise data warehouse architecture, data modelling and ETL/ELT best practices.
• Experience working in Agile delivery with CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments across data platforms.
• Nice to have: insurance industry experience.
• Nice to have: exposure to BI reporting tools, ideally Power BI.
• Nice to have: experience mentoring or supporting junior team members.
• Nice to have: ability to architect highly scalable distributed systems using a range of tools.
