Description

You act as the functional lead for the Austin qualification test lab in the Customer Technical Support group. You plan and run the test cases each customer qualification needs, sort out failures, and report qualification status to the company's product teams and customers.

You lead a small group of CTS test engineers, manage the lab's infrastructure and equipment over their lifecycle, and organise test execution across every qualification in the lab. You are the first point of contact for technical questions, scheduling clashes and blocked work.

The role sets the lab's direction through daily execution: the plan, the people, the equipment and the issues that arise between qualification cycles. It is hands-on, suited to someone who knows SSD qualification testing at the bench and can lead experienced lab engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Austin CTS test engineers on assignments, priorities, coaching and development. Set MBOs at the start of each fiscal half in line with CTS department goals set by CTS executive management, and run performance reviews at the end of each half.
  • Decide test case order and assignment across the lab's customer qualifications, weighing test time, reconfiguration cost and deadlines, and settle conflicts when two qualifications need the same server platform or fixture.
  • Make priority calls that cross products or customers, and propose changes to the CTS test process standard.
  • Monitor test progress against qualification milestones and report status, risks and slippage on a regular schedule.
  • Manage the lab's servers, power, cooling and network: upkeep, repairs, vendor service, and new equipment orders tied to the qualification roadmap. Own rack allocation and maintenance within approved budget, and coordinate new equipment and CAPEX requests.
  • Handle inventory and asset lifecycle from intake through identifying equipment at end of service and eWaste submission, and support the annual Fixed Asset Audit for the Austin site.
  • Be the first line of support for technical questions, setup problems and equipment faults. Separate setup or environment causes from genuine drive defects, and decide what gets re-run and what goes to the Japan engineering group.
  • Help move the lab from spreadsheet tracking and manually run test cases to database-driven tracking and automated test execution.

Requirements

  • Either a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or a related field, or 5+ years of hands-on SSD, storage, server or systems test engineering including qualification test execution, plus 2+ years leading engineers or running a test lab.
  • Working knowledge of SSD qualification: planning test cases, host and platform setup, firmware revisions, and triaging failures to pin them on host, platform, firmware or drive.
  • Proven ability to set goals, give feedback and write performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, including status reports and precise records in issue tracking systems.
  • Able to stand, rack equipment and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Occasional off-hours coverage when unattended tests or equipment faults need it.
  • Preferred: experience qualifying enterprise or data center SSDs with OEM or hyperscale customers.
  • Preferred: hands-on work with PCIe, NVMe and SAS interfaces, protocol analyzers and rack-scale server test environments.
  • Preferred: familiarity with test automation and database-driven test tracking, plus working knowledge of Python, PowerShell or Bash enough to review automation the team builds.
