Description

This role sets architecture direction for AI and machine learning work across the company, covering reference designs, approved technologies and how new projects are built.

Much of the work is research: you will track new techniques, platforms and architectures, test promising ones in short prototypes and share what you find.

You will work alongside enterprise architecture, cloud platform, data and cybersecurity teams so AI designs fit the wider technology estate.

Responsibilities

  • Build and keep current reference architectures for AI and ML workloads, including training, inference, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic systems and fine-tuning.
  • Set the company's technology standards for frameworks, model providers, data platforms and integration patterns.
  • Give engineering leads published standards and checklists so they can review routine designs, and keep your own reviews for high-risk or novel AI initiatives.
  • Produce reusable patterns, blueprints and starter kits that teams can apply on their own.
  • Coach project architects and tech leads so they can apply reference architectures without central involvement on every initiative.
  • Lead the team's research: scan for emerging AI and ML techniques, architectures and platforms, run time-boxed validation prototypes to judge fit for the enterprise, and publish research briefs with findings and recommendations.
  • Turn validated research into updated reference architectures, approved technology lists and design patterns, and present them to the Head of AI Governance and Architecture and peer leads for cross-cutting review before adoption.
  • Advise on build-versus-buy decisions, backed by research evidence.
  • Work with the Cybersecurity team so reference architectures and design reviews include its AI security controls, secure design requirements and red-teaming findings.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software development experience and 5+ years working in AI and ML.
  • Your background centres on reference architectures, technology standards, design patterns and platform strategy for AI and ML workloads.

Benefits

  • Pay is competitive and includes base salary, plus incentive opportunities where applicable.
  • Health and wellness coverage for you and eligible dependents.
  • Retirement savings plans, with company matching contributions where available.
