Description

You will join a team that designs, builds and improves software using a range of engineering methods, providing business, platform and technology capabilities for customers and colleagues.

The company has over 325 years of banking experience, works with customers and clients in 39 countries and employs around 90,000 people.

The programme suits school leavers and career changers, and is open to anyone regardless of background or age.

If you already hold a degree, the company suggests looking at its graduate opportunities instead.

Technology Developers build and improve the systems that support the company, learning software engineering practice alongside experienced teams to create reliable, secure digital services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and improve high-quality software with current programming languages, frameworks and tools, keeping code scalable, maintainable and fast.
  • Work with product managers, designers and other engineers to define software requirements, choose solution approaches and make sure work fits business goals and integrates smoothly.
  • Take part in code reviews, share knowledge with peers and help build a culture of strong code quality.
  • Apply secure coding practices to reduce vulnerabilities and protect sensitive data.
  • Write unit tests that check code design, readability and reliability.
  • Meet stakeholder and customer needs through operational excellence and good service, completing assigned tasks on time and to a high standard.
  • Follow defined processes and procedures, working with team members and affecting their work.
  • Escalate any policy breaches you identify.
  • Own customer service and operational tasks, and manage risk and controls for the work you hold or contribute to.
  • Work within the rules, regulations and codes of conduct that apply to your work.
  • Understand your own role, how your team contributes to wider objectives and what other teams do.
  • Choose the right option from defined alternatives and make judgements based on factual analysis.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and customers, and handle sensitive issues when they arise.
  • This is a role without people leadership responsibilities.
  • All colleagues are expected to show the company's values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship, and its mindset to Empower, Challenge and Drive.

Requirements

  • Hold SQA Highers at BBBB or above, achieved by S6, including Maths and two Science subjects.
  • Show commitment and enthusiasm, arriving every day ready to work hard, push yourself and think differently.
  • Meet the Government apprentice funding rules for England and Scotland, including a 3 year residence requirement, subject to certain exceptions.
  • Have the legal right to work for the full programme at enrolment, with no gaps and no reliance on future visa applications, for the apprenticeship period from August 2027 to August 2031.
  • Be residing in Scotland from 1 August 2027.
  • Have not previously undertaken study, education, training, qualifications or an apprenticeship, gained learning or competence from prior work, or received prior funding or support that makes you ineligible for Government apprentice funding.

Conditions

Full-time, permanent role on the apprenticeship programme.

Based at the company's campus in Glasgow, a space designed for collaboration, with creative areas and technology.

The apprenticeship may be changed to a different one before you start if a new option becomes more relevant to your role.

Hiring steps: application review, online assessments, an eligibility survey, then an in-person assessment day from October 2026 with a group activity and interview, followed by the outcome and feedback.

Applications close on 27 November 2026 and may close earlier due to volume, so apply as early as possible.
