Description

Eindhoven is the company's main technology site for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), combining research, manufacturing and service expertise.

TEM instruments use electron beams to reveal structures at very small scales, supporting research in life sciences and materials science.

This graduation project examines whether software can help engineers find faults in these instruments more quickly.

Service engineers rely on system logs, bug reports, calibration files and technical procedures. These sources are scattered, so diagnosis is slow and depends on individual experience.

The question is how historical system data and service knowledge can make diagnosis of one chosen TEM problem faster and more reliable.

The work centres on one failure mode or a closely related group, such as an offline module or a recurring performance issue.

The prototype is for internal evaluation only. Predictive maintenance may be explored later if enough degradation or failure data is available.

Responsibilities

• Map the current diagnostic process together with service engineers.
• Identify which data sources are useful and prepare them along with the technical documentation.
• Compare structured search, diagnostic rules and an LLM-based assistant.
• Build a prototype that suggests diagnoses and shows the evidence behind each suggestion.
• Measure diagnostic accuracy, diagnosis time and usability using past cases and engineer feedback.
• Deliver a research plan with a data assessment, a documented prototype with usage instructions, a comparison with the current approach, and a thesis with a final presentation and recommendations.

Requirements

• Enrolled in an HBO or WO Software Engineering programme and ready to start a graduation project.
• Programming experience, preferably in C. Python is also acceptable.
• Knowledge of software design, testing and version control.
• Ability to analyse data and approach technical problems in a structured way.
• Able to work independently and alongside software engineers and service specialists.
• Clear written and spoken English.
• An interest in AI, machine learning or information retrieval is welcome.
• No prior knowledge of electron microscopy is required.

Conditions

Standard Monday to Friday schedule.

Office-based work at the Eindhoven R&D site, in the TEM team.

Graduation assignment open to HBO bachelor or WO bachelor or master students.
