Description

The company is adding to its organizational Learning & Development (L&D) team and is hiring a Technical Instructional Design Manager.

The role builds and manages skill training for current and future Reliability & Maintenance Engineering (RME) technicians. Training covers in-person, virtual, and online formats, including on-the-job components and train-the-trainer content and delivery.

Success here means combining adult learning theory, instructional design practice, and hands-on technical industry experience to shape content and delivery methods that meet strategic business needs. The role may also help coordinate wider L&D work.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal technical and operational subject matter experts (SMEs) and the project lead to scope, outline, and design technical training that closes skill gaps and meets client needs, applying adult learning theory so it works for both learners and field trainers.
  • Keep building your adult learning skills so technical content is easy for learners to follow and practical for trainers to deliver.
  • Use generative AI tools such as Copilot to speed up curriculum drafting while keeping instructional quality and brand voice intact. Review and revise every output against learning objectives, audience level, and SME input.
  • Build working relationships with leaders in the field and in support functions.
  • Measure how well training components, experiences, and formats work using feedback from participants, SMEs, and stakeholders, along with technician proficiency on equipment after training.
  • Create and grade technical skill assessments with AI-assisted rubrics, scoring open responses, written reflections, and similar items against defined competency criteria. Work with SMEs to check AI-generated scores.
  • Manage several technical instructional design projects and requests when timelines shift. Raise roadblocks, support needs, and required changes early so work stays on track.
  • Attend train-the-trainer sessions or on-site training when needed to see how training works in the field and use what you learn to improve designs.
  • Work with the L&D team on future needs and direction, and help where needed to get good outcomes.
  • Design in-person train-the-trainer courses and in-person and virtual trainer-led courses, including materials for trainers and participants, using adult learning theory and best practice.
  • Report instructional design progress to your direct leader and project leaders.
  • Set priorities and track several content builds against key objectives, progress, and milestones. Flag roadblocks to your leader early and manage them.
  • Make sure learning objectives and content deadlines are met within scope.
  • Consult the project lead and the right SMEs to make timely decisions that keep builds on schedule and shape delivery methods.

Requirements

  • Background in Reliability and Maintenance Engineering training or L&D is strongly preferred.
  • Able to connect with people across maintenance, operations, engineering, and corporate support roles.
  • Able to work with a small team and SMEs, and to oversee one or more direct reports toward strong technical learning outcomes.
  • Experience with learning management systems and design tools, especially Workday and Articulate. Willing to learn new tools as needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • 3-5 years of broad L&D experience is preferred.
  • 2-3 years of designing technical training that is simple, effective, and can be delivered in the field across many sites and types of equipment is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • A bachelor's degree in instructional design or a similar field is preferred.

Conditions

Pay range is $76,500.00 to $90,000.00.

Final pay depends on factors such as whether a collective bargaining agreement applies, the work location and local market rates, and the candidate's experience and qualifications.
