Description

Location: UK. Fully remote, or from our London office next to East Croydon Station

Working pattern: Fully remote working is allowed, and the London office is available to you

Reports to: CTO

Hozah is a tech-led, award-winning company driving change in the parking industry and reimagining urban mobility. Our mission is simple but powerful: to transform parking into a seamless, automated experience, paving the way for smarter, more sustainable cities.

With recent recognition as PayTech Company of the Year, a place among Deloitte’s Top 50 Fastest Growing Tech Companies in the UK, and significant VC/PE investment, we’re one of the fastest scaling companies in the country.

Role Overview

You will build the products drivers and car park operators use every day: ANPR camera enforcement, pay-by-web, Autopay, permits, a client console and a motorist account app, across about 160 sites, and the new products we build next. We are a small engineering team, and we form teams around the work from the people we have.

We work in Kotlin on the backend (Spring Boot WebFlux, a domain-driven layering of domain, edge services and repository, Postgres, Axon event sourcing and Pub/Sub) and in TypeScript with Next.js and React on the front end, on GCP and Kubernetes. You do not need to know Kotlin to apply. Our engineers work with AI coding agents day to day, and we are looking for people who use them well and check what they produce.

Every engineer here is product-minded. You will talk to the people who use what you build, decide with product people what is worth building, and find out afterwards whether it worked.

You will report to the CTO and work with a team that reviews each other’s work.

The Mid-level

Mid-level Software Engineer. You own features end to end: you shape them with a product person, build them, test them, release them and look after them once they are live. You work inside an existing architecture with senior review. The work is mostly Kotlin backend plus Next.js and React front end.

Responsibilities

  • Own the delivery of what you are given, from the first ticket to production, with tests, and be the person who fixes it if it breaks.
  • Talk to the people who use what you build, and use what you learn to shape and cut scope.
  • Write acceptance criteria, and check a feature after release to see whether it was used and whether it worked.
  • Work in our existing codebase and its layering, and keep it consistent for the next engineer.
  • Use AI coding agents as part of how you work, and be accountable for everything you ship, however it was written.
  • Take part in the on-call rota and look after what you ship.
  • Review other engineers’ pull requests, and welcome review of your own.
  • Who we’re looking for
  • You’re product-minded. In the last 12 months you’ve talked to real users or customers, and what you learned changed or cut the scope of what you built. You write acceptance criteria, you check a feature after release, and you can say whether something you shipped got used.
  • You’ve shipped production code end to end in the last 12 months, in any language. You can say what you personally built, and what happened after it went live.
  • You test as you build. You can describe a bug you shipped and the test that would have caught it.
  • You use AI coding agents in real work today, and you can describe how you check what they produce, including a time one was wrong.
  • You’re willing to be on call, and you take ownership of what you ship. You don’t need to have been on call before.
  • You work well in an existing codebase with a layered or domain-driven structure that you did not design, and you read before you write.
  • You’re comfortable across the stack. You’ve changed a React or Next.js front end, or worked properly against an API contract, even if you lean backend.
  • You review others’ pull requests, finding real problems and saying so well, and you change your own design when review shows you a better way.
  • You do not need a degree, a particular programming language, or Kotlin. Experience of Axon, Temporal, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, parking or payments is welcome, but none of it is required.
  • This advert is for the Mid-level. If you have more senior experience, see our Senior Software Engineer vacancy here.

Benefits

  • Real ownership: mid-level engineers own whole features, and senior engineers own a product area.
  • A team that works with AI coding agents every day and measures what they do for us.
  • A strong, high performing culture, with genuine influence over how that culture develops as Hozah grows.
  • Fully remote working in the UK, with access to a fully refurbished, modern office, right next to East Croydon Station (with a fully stocked kitchen, offering free breakfast, lunch and drinks!).
