Description

The company has three teams that work together: AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering. Together they produce trusted data, governed platforms, reusable AI components, engineering patterns, and responsible AI capabilities used across the business.

The AI Platform team builds and runs the governed base for AI that is safe, secure, reliable, and scalable. Enterprise AI Services builds reusable domain assistants, agents, shared AI services, and agent skills that other products and business areas can use. Data Engineering builds the pipelines, data products, APIs, services, and lakehouse capabilities that give applications, analytics, and AI access to trusted data. Interns may work across all three and see how trusted data, platform capabilities, and reusable AI come together in production-ready solutions.

The internship starts in May 2027. You will work a hybrid schedule from the company's headquarters in Des Moines. Interns are assigned to a shared project, with chances to contribute across AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a small delivery team with other interns on a shared end-to-end project, which may change. Work with engineers, product partners, and subject matter experts to define the problem, split the work, combine components, and show a working solution.
  • Build or improve data ingestion and transformation pipelines that prepare trusted data for analytics, applications, or AI.
  • Work with structured and semi-structured data using lakehouse and medallion concepts, including bronze, silver, and gold layers.
  • Develop APIs, microservices, serverless components, or event-driven workflows that link data and AI capabilities.
  • Support AI platform features that make generative AI, large language models, agents, and related services safe, secure, responsible, observable, and scalable.
  • Build or improve reusable enterprise AI services, domain assistants, agents, agent skills, prompts, tools, knowledge integrations, or workflows using approved platform capabilities.
  • Apply data quality, governance, lineage, security, privacy, and access control throughout the solution lifecycle.
  • Write automated tests, monitor solution health, troubleshoot technical issues, and improve reliability and performance.
  • Use infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices so cloud deployments are repeatable, reviewable, and easy to maintain.
  • Write technical documentation, code samples, architecture diagrams, and best-practice guides that help other teams adopt the solution.
  • Present project results, lessons learned, and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • You are a current junior, senior, or master's student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • You have foundational knowledge of software development, data concepts, or cloud computing, and an interest in AI, data engineering, platform engineering, or related areas.
  • You have used at least one programming or query language, such as Python, SQL, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java,.NET/C, or C++, through coursework, projects, internships, research, or personal learning.
  • You have a basic understanding of databases, data structures, APIs, data pipelines, cloud services, or machine learning concepts.
  • You have strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills and pay close attention to detail.
  • You can troubleshoot, gather information, find root causes, and build practical solutions.
  • You communicate well in writing and speaking and can work with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • You can manage priorities, adapt to changing needs, work on your own, and contribute within a team.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Preferred: previous internship, co-op, campus leadership role, research position, or professional work experience.
  • Preferred: coursework or project work on data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, APIs, microservices, cloud applications, analytics solutions, or AI-enabled applications.
  • Preferred: exposure to AWS services, serverless or event-driven architecture, S3-based data lakes, lakehouse concepts, or distributed data processing.
  • Preferred: experience with Python, PySpark, SQL, Node.js, TypeScript, AWS Glue, CDK, Iceberg, Parquet, automated testing, Git, or CI/CD practices.
  • Preferred: exposure to generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, RAG, model evaluation, AI governance, observability, data governance, or data quality.
  • Preferred: coursework or project exposure to AI agents, domain assistants, prompt and tool integration, knowledge retrieval, workflow automation, or reusable AI services.
  • Preferred: experience using modern AI tools for software development, research, testing, documentation, or productivity.

Conditions

You do not need experience with every listed technology. The company wants curious, collaborative problem-solvers with a solid base who want to learn across AI, cloud, software, and data engineering.

The role is a hybrid schedule from the Des Moines headquarters, starting May 2027.

Applicants who need any form of immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including F1-OPT, F1-CPT, H-1B, TN, L-1, J-1, or similar, are not being considered for this role. Resources on work authorization are linked in the posting.

Applicants must tell the company if they meet the definition of a "Covered DoD official."

Applicants may use AI tools responsibly. The application asks which tools you used and how.

All information is kept confidential under EEO guidelines. The company is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Benefits

  • The internship is part of the 2027 Summer Internship Program. You will apply classroom learning, gain experience in the health insurance industry, learn from subject matter experts and leaders, and build relationships with fellow interns and technology professionals.
