Description

The company builds software for defence and security work, including systems that process, integrate and distribute Digital Fleet data for naval platforms and in-service support programs.

This is a hybrid role based in Ottawa.

You will work alongside business analysts, architects, engineering teams and operational stakeholders to learn the data sources, processing needs and target systems, then build dependable software that extracts, analyzes, validates, transforms, classifies, enriches and distributes that data.

The role calls for a solid software engineering background plus hands-on experience with data processing and enterprise integration. Your solutions may connect to files, databases, APIs, message queues, engineering applications and other enterprise systems.

Access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) is part of this role. All applicants must be eligible for that access or able to obtain authorization for it.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, integrate, test and deploy production-grade software, including automated pipelines that extract, process, transform, validate and distribute data.
  • Analyze structured, semi-structured and unstructured datasets and set the processing and mapping rules for them.
  • Connect systems through REST APIs, databases, files, message queues and other integration methods.
  • Apply enterprise integration patterns such as synchronous and asynchronous communication, messaging, publish/subscribe, routing, filtering, transformation and event-driven processing.
  • Create data mappings, validation rules, quality checks and reconciliation mechanisms.
  • Keep data integrity, consistency, completeness and traceability intact.
  • Use secure development practices, including encryption, authentication and authorization, and handle sensitive information safely.
  • Take part in architecture and design reviews and in Agile work.
  • Help deploy and troubleshoot production systems and keep improving them.
  • Write technical documentation covering interface specifications, data mappings and software design and code.
  • Find and analyze software defects and ship the fixes in product releases.
  • Keep your knowledge of software development practices and methods current.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or an equivalent education with relevant experience.
  • 7 years of software development experience, including 3 years of Python programming.
  • Experience building or interfacing with REST APIs, asynchronous publish/subscribe or message queue systems, and structured JSON or XML formats.
  • Experience programming against SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with containers using Docker, Kubernetes or OpenShift.
  • Preferred: 3 years of C programming.
  • Preferred: a strong grasp of data integrity, consistency, validation and error handling.
  • Preferred: practical knowledge of integration patterns and the reliability of distributed systems.
  • Preferred: experience with Azure Cloud Services.
  • Preferred: experience with AVEVA PI System and/or AVEVA AIM.
  • Preferred: experience with data engineering workflow tools such as AirFlow.
  • Preferred: experience with security concepts such as encryption at rest, encryption in transit, MFA and similar.
  • Preferred: experience working in Scrum or Agile and CI/CD environments.
  • Preferred: very strong skills in coding, unit testing and debugging.
  • Preferred: strong oral and written communication skills.

Conditions

Full-time work aligned with the company Canada core hours.

Mostly desk-based, with more than 90% office or desk work and a possibility of some lab or field work.

Travel may be required, including daily travel within the greater Ottawa region, under 10% of the time.

The reference total target compensation range for this role, covering annual base salary plus the variable compensation target, is $95,000 to $110,000 CAD per year. Where you land in that range depends on your career history, skills, performance, the company's salary budget, customer program needs and internal equity. Additional benefits and compensation may be offered depending on circumstances unrelated to legally protected characteristics.

The company uses AI-enabled tools to support sourcing, resume matching and interview scheduling, but human recruiters make all hiring decisions.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and will provide accommodations throughout the interview process on request, treated as confidential.

Access to controlled hardware, software or technical information also falls under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program, the Canadian Industrial Security Program, the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the EAR. Applicants must be eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and able to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance.

  • Retirement savings plans (RRSP, DCPP, TFSA) with a company contribution, plus a DCPP match with no vesting period.
