Description

The company is hiring a Software Architect for its systems group to set the overall architecture for its embedded Linux platforms, which are used in mission-critical intelligent applications.

The role covers system architecture, technical direction, interfaces and engineering standards. You will guide teams through hard architectural decisions and work with senior engineers and cross-functional groups to turn business and customer needs into solid technical designs, shaping the long-term direction of the platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Define the overall system architecture and component structure for embedded Linux platforms, covering APIs, interfaces, integration points, hardware abstraction and BSP architecture.
  • Design solutions that are scalable, maintainable, secure, reliable and high-performing, and that meet both functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Build the technical vision and roadmap for the system, assessing technologies, frameworks and tools, architectural trade-offs, technical debt and long-term improvements.
  • Create and maintain architecture diagrams, specifications, technical documentation, standards, guidelines and design best practices.
  • Review architectural decisions and designs so they stay consistent and aligned across teams and projects, and resolve architectural conflicts and complex technical problems.
  • Mentor engineering teams and guide architecture discussions, technical reviews, and design and code reviews.
  • Work with technical leads, senior engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to turn customer and business requirements into workable system architectures.
  • Lead technical excellence through architecture governance, design standards and continuous improvement, balancing innovation, stability, performance and risk.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related field, plus 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 7+ years in embedded Linux or systems software and 5+ years in architecture or senior technical design roles.
  • Expert understanding of system architecture and design, including building complex, large-scale systems and defining component structures, APIs, interfaces and integration strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of Linux kernel and user space architecture, embedded and real-time systems, hardware abstraction, BSP architecture, system integration, build systems, toolchains and development tools.
  • Strong C/C++ and systems programming skills, with knowledge of software design patterns, architectural patterns, architecture evaluation and trade-off analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. You can influence architectural decisions, mentor engineers, build consensus and translate business requirements into architecture.
  • Preferred: architecture certifications such as TOGAF, extensive Yocto Project experience, safety-critical experience with standards such as ISO 26262 or DO-178C, formal methods and verification knowledge, open-source architecture contributions, and published technical work.
  • Preferred: experience in automotive, aerospace or industrial sectors.
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis, with no current or future need for visa sponsorship or transfer. Employment eligibility will be verified at hire.

Conditions

Preferred location is Austin, TX. Candidates in San Diego, CA, Walnut Creek, CA or Boston, MA will also be considered and must be able to work hybrid or on-site as required.
