Senior Software Engineer

Description

The company runs a scalable Data-as-a-Service platform that supplies data to its digital products and to more than 2,000 engineers across the organization. You will design, build and evolve key parts of it, taking full ownership of significant features and services in its real-time and micro-batch data pipelines. These pipelines feed product work, internal tools and analytics.

The work centers on fast, low-latency data delivery through streaming pipelines, dynamic transformations and APIs. These support application development, AI and ML, and insights. You will help shape the architecture and engineering practices behind self-service analytics and day-to-day operational decisions. You will make sound design calls within your area and help the platform stay reliable, fast and easy to use at scale.

Responsibilities

• Build scalable distributed systems on event-driven and streaming pipelines that ingest and process robot, manufacturing and clinical data.
• Create self-service APIs and applications that let users reach and work with data.
• Work with core engineering teams to change data models as business needs shift.
• Apply CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure-as-code and microservice architectures in your everyday work.
• Take part in team planning, code reviews, KPI reviews and design discussions. Contribute input and carry decisions through to completion in your area.
• Mentor junior engineers and new hires, sharing knowledge to speed up their ramp-up and growth.
• Lead moderately complex data projects where needed, coordinating with cross-functional partners to get good results.

Requirements

• Fluent in at least two major programming languages.
• Hands-on experience building data pipelines and working with distributed systems using Apache Spark, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Snowflake and Airflow.
• Working knowledge of data platform components and design patterns: event-driven pipelines (for example AWS Lambda), message queues (for example Kafka), container orchestration (for example Kubernetes), stream processing (for example Flink or Spark), relational databases (for example Postgres), data warehouses (for example Snowflake), analytics engineering (for example DBT), workflow orchestration (for example Airflow) and search engines (for example Elasticsearch).
• Solid grasp of CI/CD workflows, unit and integration testing, and deployment patterns.
• Experience with AWS, GCP or both.
• Experience with SQL and relational databases.
• Ability and willingness to collaborate across functions, own your deliverables and push your own progress forward, while knowing when to escalate.
• Solid quantitative background in computer science, engineering, physics, math or a related field. A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, information technology or a related field is the minimum, along with typically 5 years of relevant experience.
• Preferred: experience on a platform team.
• Preferred: experience with GitLab CI/CD or other CI tooling.
• Preferred: experience with Terraform, Ansible and Packer, plus general infrastructure-as-code best practices.
• Preferred: familiarity with CNCF projects and experience using them successfully in past projects.

Export controls apply to some roles for prospective employees who are nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions. Where this applies, the company may need to obtain a U.S. export license, which can take 3 to 6+ months, or put a Technology Control Plan (TCP) in place, which typically adds 2 weeks. Any offer is conditional on an approved export license and/or an executed TCP before the start date. That date may or may not be flexible, and the timeline will not unreasonably hold up hiring. Candidates will be told about any steps required.
