The company is a billion-dollar global firm based in Research Triangle Park, NC, that builds retail store solutions.
The team delivers major retail platform solutions and needs a hands-on Software Engineer III who can lead delivery from start to finish.
You will write code, design solutions, review work, lead clients technically, and sign off on delivery and post-release support. You will turn business needs into software you help build.
You will run Dual-Track Agile work: prototyping and checking feasibility on the Discovery Track, and keeping quality, traceability, and measurable results on the Delivery Track.
The company wants someone who codes every day, builds prototypes on their own initiative, and uses AI and agent tools throughout the lifecycle, from analysis and design to testing, documentation, and code generation. You will also guide engineers and make key technical trade-offs.
The role calls for solid knowledge of retail platforms such as POS systems and store operations, cloud-native development experience, and skill with generative and agentic AI tools. You will help keep code quality and architecture sound while moving faster, and help make solutions both new and reliable in operation.
The company will not sponsor visas for this role now or later. You must be able to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
The role is based near or within the Cincinnati, OH area.
Responsibilities
Use AI and agent workflows in your daily work to speed up design, prototyping, code generation, test case creation, specification drafting, and automated checks.
Use AI-assisted development yourself, set an example for the team, and make sure generative AI tools are used ethically and responsibly.
Own delivery across the Discovery and Delivery Tracks by building and validating prototypes, contributing to formal designs, breaking work into deliverables, and shipping accepted implementations.
Lead the Discovery Track by writing working prototypes and demonstrating them to confirm feasibility and get stakeholders aligned before full build.
Turn discovery results into delivery backlog items, and work with implementation teams to protect design intent, code quality, and non-functional requirements.
Help with technical design for products and integrations, including ADRs, interface contracts, data models, sequence diagrams, migration and rollback plans, and traceability matrices, working with architects on wider governance.
Act as the main technical lead in client work: run workshops, present solutions, make trade-off decisions, secure approvals, and serve as subject-matter expert for assigned platform areas.
Build critical components and complex features in modern retail platform stacks, and review and approve work from implementation teams.
Apply and reinforce engineering standards, reusable integration patterns, and non-functional requirements such as security, scalability, and observability across client solutions.
Coach engineers on AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, specification-driven design, and platform practices, mainly through pair programming, code reviews, and working examples.
Help shape platform and product strategy by finding reusable assets, API-first design opportunities, and technical gaps that need investment.
Analyse risks in technical decisions and plan mitigations, covering backward compatibility, data integrity, and compliance constraints.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, plus 5+ years of experience.
Hands-on use of AI-assisted tools and workflows, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code, for design, coding, test generation, and documentation.
5+ years of professional software development, with daily coding and prototyping in current technology stacks.
5+ years building cloud-native, microservices, or event-driven systems, with experience on Azure or an equivalent cloud platform.
Strong skills in stacks such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript, and React or Vue.
Proven record of owning end-to-end delivery for medium to large projects, covering design, implementation, and post-release operations.
Track record of building production code, prototypes, and reference implementations to test feasibility.
Strong experience with REST/OpenAPI, messaging platforms, and relational or non-relational databases.
Hands-on work with CI/CD, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, deployment tooling, automated testing, and AI or agent workflows that speed up the lifecycle.
Practical use of generative AI and AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor, with measurable delivery impact.
Strong stakeholder communication: able to run workshops, present technical solutions, and work across business and engineering teams.
Proven record of mentoring engineers, doing thorough code reviews, and promoting engineering best practices across teams.
Preferred qualifications:
Retail platform knowledge, including POS systems and store operations, is highly desirable.
Certifications such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect, or equivalent cloud credentials are preferred.
Strong understanding of advanced security practices and compliance requirements in enterprise systems is preferred.
Experience leading Dual-Track Agile, managing both Discovery and Delivery Tracks and turning discovery outcomes into backlog items, is preferred.
Experience contributing to platform strategy, reusable assets, and API-first design is preferred.
Expertise in formal or machine-readable specifications, such as OpenAPI, UML+OCL, TLA+, or equivalents, to guide implementation and enable automated validation, is preferred.
