Description

The company builds tools that help small businesses take payments, process orders, sell online and manage their money.

The payments platform has run the company's global business for over 10 years. The Payments Tribe in Sofia builds it, split into cross-functional, autonomous, co-located squads that each own a part of the platform end to end.

The company is now building its own acquiring capability in Europe, a major step for its payments business.

You will join a growing Payments team building the next generation of payment capabilities. The work focuses on foundational systems that make the company's products more reliable, scalable and flexible.

This is a new, important area of the platform. Your technical decisions will shape how the company supports millions of small businesses worldwide, and you can contribute from an early stage and see your work in live payment experiences.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the own acquiring team, you will help build and evolve the systems behind payment experiences. You will work on greenfield components that make the platform more reliable and scalable and that let the company offer new payment capabilities to small businesses worldwide. You will shape architecture and engineering practices on highly critical infrastructure built from the ground up.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build core acquiring capabilities, covering authorisation, clearing and settlement.
  • Develop the APIs, data models and services that will underpin the acquiring platform.
  • Build reporting, back-office and operational tools that keep daily acquiring work reliable.
  • Make sure systems meet card-scheme, security and compliance requirements.
  • Set up strong observability, monitoring and incident response for a payments platform that never goes offline.
  • Work with teams across Processing, Reconciliation, Risk, Compliance, Finance and Treasury.
  • Take part in architecture discussions and make sound technical decisions in an unclear, changing domain.
  • Own medium-to-large technical initiatives that span several teams.
  • Find and help prioritise technical debt, operational risks and platform improvements.
  • Help grow the team by mentoring, reviewing code and shaping testing and on-call practices.

Requirements

  • Solid programming experience, including Golang, and a record of building reliable backend systems.
  • Experience building and consuming APIs in production.
  • Understanding of software architecture, design principles, data modelling, API design and SOLID principles.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases. PostgreSQL and Kafka experience is valuable.
  • Practical experience with Docker, AWS and Kubernetes.
  • A DevOps mindset and an interest in building, running and improving the systems you own.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical way of investigating complex issues.
  • A collaborative approach and openness to feedback.
  • A strong sense of ownership and accountability for your work.
  • Advantageous, but not required: experience with Elixir or another functional language.
  • Advantageous, but not required: experience with AWS Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Advantageous, but not required: experience in fintech, payments or another regulated domain.
  • Advantageous, but not required: knowledge of card schemes, acquiring, authorisation, clearing or settlement.
  • You do not need prior acquiring knowledge. Your technical foundation, curiosity and willingness to learn matter most. You will work alongside colleagues building this capability together, with room to ask questions and have an impact.
  • Meeting every point above is not expected. If you don't match all of them, you can still apply.
