Senior Technical Writer (Contract)

Responsibilities

• Gather knowledge from subject matter experts by scheduling intake sessions and leading interviews in person and virtually.
• Prepare discussion guides and other materials to structure stakeholder conversations.
• Ask the right questions and turn what you learn into documentation that captures the experts' knowledge.
• Build a working understanding of the company's products and services.
• Write clear, user-friendly documentation of processes and workflows.
• Write, edit and review documents so they stay at a high standard of quality, following the company's style, structure and tone standards.
• Guide and contribute to the work of other writers and knowledge professionals.
• Take on other related tasks as department or company needs change.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in editorial writing, knowledge management or journalism.
• A portfolio or other samples of relevant writing.
• You can produce high-quality written knowledge content and make complicated processes easy to understand.
• You know current practices for content that is accessible, usable and well structured.
• You can engage stakeholders in knowledge-gathering interviews and follow-up communication.
• You can manage the work of one or more other writers and collaborate within a multidisciplinary design team.
• You adjust readily when priorities shift.
• You communicate efficiently and precisely, with clarity, and show user-centred thinking and empathy in a highly regulated setting.
• Preferred: a background in journalism or similar expository writing.

Conditions

Fixed-term contract lasting 6 months.

Paid hourly at $80-100 per hour, depending on experience.

Hybrid role based in the New York City office, with 2-3 days a week on site and the rest remote.

Actual pay depends on factors specific to each candidate, including skill set, relevant experience and work location. Ranges for other locations may differ based on local labor costs.
