Description

The company has an opening for a Technical Writer on a full-time basis in the Fort Meade, MD area. The work is mission focused and cleared, so applicants need an active TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph.

The writer prepares, reviews, revises and maintains technical documents, including work instructions, standard operating procedures, production processes, security handling procedures, governance documents, quality assurance materials and training materials.

The role sits within a small team that also supports configuration management and documentation oversight. It covers software and systems engineering, system operations, testing and user documentation, including installation, configuration and how-to guides, code documentation, implementation guides, end-user guides, and field, data definition and data flow documentation.

The position depends on funding and may not be filled right away. It reflects roles the company regularly has open, and applicants may be considered for other openings at the company.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain operations documentation, user guides, manuals and technical publications, including assisting with this work.
  • Write technical copy for different document types, applying basic grammar and writing concepts, and scale the work to programs of similar complexity.
  • Gather technical information from engineering drawings, engineering documents, subject matter experts, engineers and other sources, then turn it into written text.
  • Organize information from multiple sources and explain highly technical subjects clearly for a broad readership.
  • Work with developers to produce quality documentation and training materials, and take part in every phase of documentation work.
  • Keep the internal documentation library current.

  • Prepare reports, responses and briefings for audiences with different needs.
  • Produce defense acquisition documents, user manuals and training manuals for DoD electronic equipment and systems, and interpret engineering, maintenance and operational procedure drawings to blend large amounts of computer-related information.
  • Produce technical documentation for Cryptologic programs or projects that develop analytic tradecraft methods.
  • Apply the DoD/IC DS-89 technical manual standard to all work products.

Requirements

  • Level 1: an active TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph, plus an associate degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university. Two (2) years of additional technical writing experience may replace the associate degree. You also need two (2) years of technical writing experience on programs and contracts of similar scope, type and complexity.
  • Level 2: an active TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph, plus a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university. You also need six (6) years of technical writing experience on programs and contracts of similar scope, type and complexity.
