Senior Product Manager, Tax

Description

The company makes running a small business easier by handling payroll, benefits, compliance and HR for customers. It serves more than 12,000 businesses and 200,000 workers from offices in New York, Toronto, London, Tampa and Mexico City.

The Product team builds software for small business owners in complex regulated areas such as fintech, healthcare and HR tech. Product managers lead cross-functional work with engineering, design, data services, operations and customer-facing teams.

The Tax team handles the government side of payroll for customers: calculating, depositing and filing payroll taxes across federal, state and local agencies. Its work covers three goals: accuracy and compliance, a better customer experience, and tooling that lets internal Tax Operations teams scale.

You will be a senior product manager on the Tax team, owning the roadmap for one or more pods. You will work with engineers and help the team plan, prioritize and deliver. Team lunches and games are part of the culture.

Responsibilities

• Work through complex problems that involve both the platform and the customer experience
• Work with design to find where users struggle with tax filing, tax reporting, rate setup and tax communications, especially where regulatory language is confusing
• Build and carry out a product strategy, linking research to roadmap outcomes
• Scope, prioritize and deliver projects with measurable business impact, with clear goals, resources and ownership
• Work closely with design and engineering, and run effective team processes and meetings
• Treat tax accuracy and compliance as product outcomes, since errors cost customers money and can create regulatory problems
• Understand engineering trade-offs and explain them so stakeholders have realistic expectations about deadlines and scope
• Build team morale and collaborate with product managers on other pods and teams

Requirements

• At least 5 years of product management experience in a modern technology business
• Strong stakeholder management and the ability to influence partners without formal authority
• Interest in using generative AI to reduce routine work and speed up delivery, while keeping strong critical thinking and core knowledge
• Experience leading complex initiatives across teams, from idea through execution
• A record of shipping continuous improvements to a large, existing product portfolio
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break complex problems into steps the team can execute against business needs
• Deep empathy for users and a high standard for user experience
• Clear communication of product matters, including changes to scope or direction
• You do not need to be a compliance expert, but you must ask good questions of partners and balance product needs with compliance requirements

Conditions

The base salary range for the New York City office is targeted at $166,000 to $242,500 per year.

Actual pay depends on factors including skill set, experience level and work location. Ranges for other locations may differ based on local labor costs.
