Description

Senior software engineering role covering a product component from requirements and design through build, testing and upkeep.

The work centres on the components and applications that make up a product, and on how they connect to the business and technical needs behind them.

Responsibilities

  • Compare customer and business expectations with the current product and solutions to find gaps and needed changes; for agile work, do this for each iteration.
  • Sort requirements into their applicable types.
  • Spot likely solution risks during requirements gathering, alert the relevant stakeholders and recommend corrective steps.
  • Help write user stories for components, applications and complex features in agile work.
  • Help design solutions so that processes and applications work together for specific product modules.
  • Weigh trade-offs in component design against business requirements.
  • Help turn high-level designs into detailed designs with mock screens, pseudo code and functional logic for specific modules.
  • Build and configure lean code for whole components or applications that meets business, technical and non-functional requirements, including maintainability, availability and scalability.
  • Help select languages, development standards and tools for coding and configuration.
  • Independently learn the basics of coding languages and frameworks that will be useful later.
  • Write scripts that automate repetitive and routine work in CI/CD, testing or other processes where applicable.
  • Add telemetry features independently where needed.
  • Make sure security policy requirements are applied during code development and configuration.
  • Translate customer requirements into test objectives.
  • Identify and write test cases for components and modules, run them, and log errors and defects across the whole component.
  • Run different types of testing with suitable tools for the testing need.
  • Track and analyze defects for components and modules, and run regression tests after every code change.
  • Review defects from past projects and solutions to prevent similar ones from recurring.
  • Troubleshoot performance and availability bottlenecks in applications.
  • Carry out complex maintenance on applications independently.
  • Monitor and assess application performance through relevant metrics.
  • Perform corrective, adaptive and perfective maintenance, and re-engineering work.
  • Analyze application logs, maintenance records and performance data, and report your findings.
  • Assess change requests to determine which are valid and feasible.
  • Keep the project on approved milestones and timelines.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree or equivalent in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, information technology, electronic engineering, electrical engineering or a related field, plus 1 year of software engineering or related experience; or a Bachelor's degree in one of those fields plus 3 years of software engineering or related experience.
  • Experience designing and building enterprise-scale big data systems and distributed pipelines, both real-time and batch, that scale well, respond with low latency and tolerate faults.
  • Experience with data modeling and data architecture design.
  • Experience with data governance, including data quality, metadata management and security.
  • Experience with big data processing frameworks and query engines such as Apache Kafka, Apache Spark (Scala/PySpark), Druid, Trino and Hudi.
  • Experience writing high-performance queries over large datasets.
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Scala, shell scripting, and C++, Go or COBOL.
  • Experience building data pipelines and processing layers.
  • Experience with DAG-based workflow orchestration using Apache Airflow and Java DAG structures.
  • Experience with public cloud platforms, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and operations.
  • Experience developing RESTful services and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Git, Maven, Jenkins, Concord, OneOps, Docker, Kubernetes, Prometheus, Grafana and Splunk.
  • Experience with containerization, DevOps practices, and stress, load and integration testing to confirm system performance and reliability.
  • Experience building custom UI components in React or AngularJS that show system health, alert status, ingestion metrics and reliability across distributed streaming platforms.
  • Experience with Protocol Buffers (protobuf) and serializing high-volume, petabyte-scale data.
  • Experience tuning system performance and processing high data volumes in distributed environments, using profiling tools such as perf, bpftrace and flame graphs, plus Linux performance analysis utilities.
  • No minimum amount of experience with these skills is required.
