Senior Software Engineer

Description

You will join the Servo Software team within System Software, which builds the real-time software infrastructure behind the company's flagship surgical system. That infrastructure covers performance, safety, observability and user-facing features.

The team's scope includes observability, motion control algorithms, state machines, audio intercom and system sounds, data streaming and logging, and platform support for the next-generation simulator line. Other teams depend on this work, so the role sits where system architecture, feature development, observability and product safety meet.

As a senior engineer you will work with cross-functional teams to build tools for system introspection, observability and event timeline visualization on the robotic surgical platform. You will architect and build applications and pipelines that track system status through events, logs and data streams, construct event timelines and investigate complex multimodal robotics issues.

Responsibilities

• Design and build robust, efficient real-time robotics software in C/C++, along with observability applications such as automatic issue detection and log replay.
• Build data pipelines and analytics that show system status from events, logs and data streams, support event timelines, and help diagnose multimodal robotics problems.
• Write robust Python applications that analyze system status from logs, events and data streams, whether running locally against the system or against the backend.
• Propose and prove out architecture and process improvements that benefit the wider organization, not only your own team.
• Work across several areas: robotic system software, system introspection and event timeline visualization, real-time performance analysis, extending frameworks to future products, bringing up research prototypes, and building hardware and software diagnostic tools.
• Write unit tests and integrate code to keep the system highly reliable.
• Help run system failure analysis, surface issues and risks, and propose mitigation strategies.
• Work with embedded software, user interface, data pipeline and analytics, field service, and system test and reliability teams to take observability applications from prototype to launch.
• Document designs according to the company's development and quality guidelines.

Requirements

• Eight years of experience with a bachelor's degree, six years with a master's degree, three years with a PhD, or equivalent experience.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and experience with Python.
• Familiarity with building embedded software, distributed systems, or applications that process observability data such as logs, events or data streams from robotics or embedded devices.
• Preferred: experience with robotics and system software for complex distributed systems.
• Preferred: comfort with design input, design output, traceability and risk analysis.
• Preferred: experience across the full product lifecycle, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, validation and transfer to manufacturing.
• Preferred: experience working with data platform teams and developing data pipelines for embedded device data.
• Preferred: familiarity with system observability, processing, visualization and automatic issue detection for robotics, such as cloud-based Python analysis of events, logs and data using known signatures or ML techniques.
• Preferred: experience with data visualization and knowledge of full stack software development.
• Preferred: familiarity with deployment infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.

Conditions

Offers for those roles depend on an approved export license and/or a Technology Control Plan being in place before the start date. Licensing can take 3 to 6+ months, and a Technology Control Plan typically adds about 2 weeks.

Pay is based mainly on the job level at which the role is filled and the candidate's qualifications, consistent with applicable law.
