Description

You will lead the AV Data Processing and Services team, a group of distributed systems, data infrastructure, and platform engineers who build and run the pipelines and storage that process and serve autonomous vehicle telemetry at petabyte scale.

The platform feeds the company's perception, planning, ML training, safety metrics, and simulation work. The role sits between cloud infrastructure and downstream AI and ML pipelines, and requires balancing reliability, high throughput, and cloud cost.

Responsibilities

  • Write and review code alongside the team, taking part in technical design, implementation, and delivery while coaching the wider engineering group.
  • Hire, coach, and develop software and data engineers. Build a team that values sound engineering, clean code, and personal ownership of work.
  • Define the vision and architecture for the AV data services, including batch inference tooling and streaming services used for replay and simulation.
  • Reduce cloud compute and storage spend across AWS, Azure, or GCP, using tiered S3 storage and distributed caching, without sacrificing query performance.
  • Set production SLAs, monitoring, data lineage tracking, and automated tests for every data service. Lead incident response and root-cause analysis for critical platform outages.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering work in distributed systems, big data platforms, or cloud infrastructure, including 2+ years in a formal engineering management role.
  • Hands-on experience building, running, and scaling petabyte-scale distributed pipelines and storage, using tools such as Spark, Beam, Ray, Flink, Kafka, Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Presto/Trino.
  • Expert proficiency in C++, Rust, Go, or Python, with a record of building reliable distributed systems.
  • Expertise running services on at least one major public cloud (Azure, GCP, or AWS), with automation and observability practices.
  • A proven ability to turn unclear, cross-functional needs into dependable technical roadmaps and reliable software.
  • Preferred: experience building data platform services for PB-scale environments, covering cataloging, indexing, query planning, pruning, and optimization.
  • Preferred: interest in self-driving technology and its potential effect on society.
  • Preferred: comfort working across several programming languages.
  • Preferred: experience with data-intensive distributed compute architectures.

Conditions

The company does not provide immigration sponsorship for this role. Candidates who will need sponsorship now or in the future, including direct company sponsorship, the company acting as employer of record on a government form, or any work authorization that requires a written submission or other immigration support from the company (such as H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1), should not apply.

This is a hybrid role. You are expected to work from a specific location at least 3 days a week, or at a different frequency set by your manager.

Some candidates may be asked to complete a role-related assessment and/or a pre-employment screening before they start.

The company is committed to equal employment opportunity and to a workplace free of unlawful discrimination.
