Description

The role sits in the market risk area and centres on the bank's Market Risk calculation and reporting platform, which supports Historical Simulation VaR, Stressed VaR (sVaR), intraday risk and regulatory reporting.

The team is part of a large UK bank group whose purpose is to help Britain prosper, and the scale of the group gives plenty of room to learn and grow.

The application closes on Friday 13 November 2026.

Job title: Senior Software Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, optimisation and continued development of the Market Risk calculation and reporting platform.
  • Design and tune large cloud-native risk data platforms so that risk measures are produced on time, accurately and reliably across billions of records and several asset classes.
  • Work with Market Risk, Quantitative Analytics, Trading and Technology teams to turn mathematical and regulatory requirements into production-ready solutions that scale.
  • Set the technical direction for platform modernisation, covering risk engine simplification, cloud migration, performance, data platform optimisation and operational resilience.
  • Act as senior delivery lead and subject matter expert, guiding agile teams, managing complex dependencies and driving business-critical risk programmes to completion.

Requirements

  • Market risk domain expertise and quantitative knowledge.
  • Extensive experience analysing, designing and optimising large Historical Simulation VaR and Stressed VaR (sVaR) engines, with deep understanding of risk sensitivities, standalone versus contributory VaR reporting and intraday VaR methods.
  • A proven record of carrying out complex risk model migrations, moving from broad sector, seniority and ratings-based averages to granular ISIN-level approaches, using advanced proxy methods where market data is incomplete.
  • Direct experience with major structural and regulatory market changes, such as IBOR and RFR transitions, and with delivering mandated changes such as FDSF (Firm Data Submission Framework) into core risk systems without breaking production SLAs.
  • Deep expertise in SQL Server and Azure SQL Hyperscale, including performance tuning, execution plan analysis, partitioning, clustered columnstore optimisation across billions of rows, ETL design and large-scale analytical processing.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise trading, valuation and risk platforms, particularly Murex and Summit, including STP pipeline setup, MUST functionality for complex structured derivatives, cross-entity ledger migrations and front-to-back valuation and risk reconciliations.
  • Strong delivery leadership with a practical, hands-on approach.
  • Exceptional ability to work through the mathematics behind a VaR change with Risk Managers and Quants, turn those needs into precise technical requirements and build the automated integrity tools needed for reliable release testing.
  • Relevant experience gained in other ways is welcome, even where it does not match stated years of experience.

Conditions

Base salary between £84,624 and £126,936.
