The role is a Senior Software Engineer position on the Insurance technology team, based in Denver, CO or Seattle, WA, with in-office attendance up to three days a week.
The team builds, supports and extends web applications used by customers and internal staff, including apps that connect to third-party services and databases and have user-facing screens. You will work on both existing and new capabilities.
The team mainly works in C and.NET along with modern web technologies. Engineers from other stacks are considered if they have solid software engineering fundamentals and can get up to speed quickly.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The company will not sponsor employment visas for this role, now or later.
Responsibilities
Design, build and improve scalable, easy-to-maintain web applications for the Insurance business, including integrations with third-party web services, databases and user interfaces.
Keep existing applications running by troubleshooting, fixing bugs, applying required upgrades, improving performance and making careful changes to current functionality.
Analyze complex business and technical problems and design solutions that hold up over time and are practical to maintain.
Turn business requirements and acceptance criteria into sound technical designs, and show finished features against the agreed outcomes.
Raise engineering standards through code reviews, testing, documentation, design discussions and ongoing process improvements.
Work with engineers and business partners on initiatives involving several people, explaining technical ideas and trade-offs clearly.
Requirements
At least 5 years of professional experience building and supporting web applications.
Experience with a modern object-oriented language and web framework. The team mainly uses C and.NET/ASP.NET, but comparable technologies are accepted if you have strong fundamentals and can ramp up quickly.
Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern front-end framework such as React, Angular or Vue, or a proven ability to pick up new frameworks fast.
Experience building business applications on relational databases such as SQL Server, with knowledge of database design and data access patterns. NoSQL experience is helpful.
Experience building and integrating service-oriented and event-driven systems, including APIs and third-party integrations.
Solid grasp of software engineering practices such as maintainable design, SOLID principles, design patterns, code review and unit testing.
Experience working in Agile teams and delivering work against defined requirements and acceptance criteria.
Ability to grasp complex business logic and project needs, and to communicate well with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
Provide leadership by shaping design decisions and team processes, sharing knowledge, mentoring engineers through feedback and code reviews, and finding ways to raise standards across the team.
Demonstrated experience using AI to design and build workflows, automation or other solutions that improve technical processes or deliver measurable business results. Ability to act as a thought leader and driver of AI adoption and innovation across the organization.
A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Curiosity about new languages, frameworks, technologies and business domains, rather than attachment to one stack.
Comfort joining an established codebase and sound judgment about when to improve, refactor or leave existing functionality alone.
Care about code quality and treat code review and feedback as ways to improve the team and product.
Enjoy working with other developers, sharing what you know and learning from them.
Willing to ask questions, challenge assumptions constructively and state your view when you see a better approach.
Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or GCP is helpful. Azure experience, including provisioning, monitoring, performance management or Application Insights, is a plus.
Knowledge of current web practices using HTML5, CSS and TypeScript is helpful.
Within the first months, build a working understanding of the Insurance applications, integrations and business processes you support, and become a reliable owner of that work.
Become productive in the team's stack, applying your engineering fundamentals while learning unfamiliar tools or frameworks as needed.
Deliver new features and enhancements against clear requirements and acceptance criteria, with maintainability, reliability and testability built in.
Make existing applications easier to support and change through careful fixes, upgrades, refactoring and engineering improvements.
Be someone business partners and teammates can count on to communicate clearly, raise trade-offs early and collaborate well on complex work.
Lift the engineering environment through sound technical judgment, constructive code review, documentation and knowledge sharing.
