Description

The company's core work is storytelling, and this role sits in its digital commerce group, which builds customer-facing shopping products and web apps.

You will join a team that moves quickly and aims for results, and the company operates across studios, direct-to-consumer services and TV media.

The commerce group is growing fast, and the work includes building the tooling that supports that growth.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve commerce products together with the engineering and platform teams.
  • Design and build complex features that make the customer experience better.
  • Apply strong system engineering knowledge, including database design, application architecture, operating systems and networking, alongside your application development work.
  • Define requirements for the publishing platform so editors can work more effectively, and propose features that widen reach and improve the end-user experience.
  • Work with several teams on engineering projects that grow the audience.
  • Create and promote better ways to gather and share insights across core engineering tools and products.
  • Help plan short-term content with editorial and programming teams.
  • Mentor colleagues, encourage cooperation and put good engineering workflow practices in place.
  • Take ownership of the code you and your team write.
  • Explain difficult technical ideas clearly.
  • Review code critically as a way to learn, and refactor code and artifacts safely when needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's or master's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering or another engineering or related field.
  • 5-10 years of software development experience, with a focus on application development.
  • At least 5 years of experience with Node.js, Express, Vue.js and ES6.
  • Working knowledge of modern JavaScript, TypeScript and Python, along with AWS services, Postgres, Elasticsearch and Redis.
  • Expert-level skill with Fastly, AWS, Serverless/SAM, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Jenkins, Snowflake and Git.
  • Deep experience with modern development tools and hands-on work on both client and server code, plus a solid grasp of common data structures and algorithms.
  • A drive to keep growing professionally as an individual contributor.
  • Past work building medium to large, mission-critical, highly available production systems that support essential business, technical or operational functions.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, including explaining complex problems to non-engineers.
  • Experience monitoring code health, infrastructure health and application performance.
  • Experience in e-commerce, affiliate platforms or consumer media.
  • Experience on Kanban or Scrum teams and with the tools used to manage them.
  • Active involvement in the technology community.
  • Experience interviewing candidates and in talent acquisition.
  • Experience with Agile methods such as Scrum or Kanban, and support for continuous deployment and incremental delivery of business value.
  • Plus: experience with non-procedural programming or functional-style concepts applied professionally.
  • Plus: two years of object-oriented JavaScript experience.
