Description

The mySugr GmbH was acquired by the company in 2017, and the Vienna office is one of the company's global sites. You will be based in central Vienna and may work on mySugr, Accu-Chek, navify or any other the company product or solution.

The role sits in the Architecture sub-chapter of Patient Insights Software Applications (PIxSW), which designs digital health and Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) products across mobile apps, connected devices and cloud services, all built on the company's shared mobile and digital platforms.

RIS is one of the first teams at the company to bring AI into engineering and is building an AI-augmented software development lifecycle (aSDLC). The team is small and senior, and works across the full path from a mobile screen to a cloud data platform.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture across native mobile, backend and the navify cloud, with the app-to-cloud integration designed as a core part of the system.
  • Write technical designs, architecture decision records and C4 models that a team can build from.
  • State trade-offs openly (cost, risk, time to value, reuse) and keep regulated and non-regulated parts of a product separate so that a product can move into medical device territory.
  • Help define the aSDLC by bringing agentic tools such as Claude or ChatGPT into design, prototyping, documentation and review, and show the team good practice.
  • Set standards and guardrails so AI-assisted work stays reliable and accountable in a regulated setting, with a person owning every result.
  • Design modular, well-bounded backend services on the Java and Spring stack.
  • Design data and integration flows across the navify platform (identity, consent, notifications, AI, FHIR) and the cloud beneath it.
  • Contribute to the reusable blueprint that every new product starts from, extend the shared mobile foundation and navify instead of rebuilding them, and move proven components back into the shared base.
  • Give squads a clear technical direction and help them choose when they are stuck between options.
  • Work with the mobile specialists and the Cloud and DevOps sub-chapter, adding cross-domain breadth without duplicating their depth.
  • Raise the quality bar through design reviews, pairing and mentoring, and produce documentation that keeps products audit-ready.
  • Contribute to the team's technical direction as one voice within a shared architecture group.
  • Spend roughly 80% of your time on architecture, design and technical leadership, and 20% on hands-on prototyping as needed.
  • Travel about 10%, mostly between the Vienna and Sant Cugat sites and for the company architecture community.

Requirements

  • A solid record as a Software Architect across mobile, backend and cloud, with enough native mobile knowledge to work well with specialists.
  • Deep experience in cloud and backend architecture: Java and Spring, modular and domain-driven design, APIs and integration, cloud-native patterns, and CI/CD. Experience with a major cloud provider is a plus.
  • Daily use of agentic AI tools such as Claude Code, with a clear sense of where they fail and a wish to advance the aSDLC work.
  • The ability to turn architecture into work a team can act on, including technical designs, decision records and C4 models, and to help a team reach a decision.
  • Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments. SaMD or other medical device software experience is a strong plus.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to bring people along, since you lead through expertise rather than authority.
  • Comfort making trade-offs and defending them, and willingness to build prototypes when they reduce design risk.
  • Bonus: FHIR and healthcare data standards, identity and consent platforms, reference architecture or platform teams, and deeper SaMD experience.

Conditions

Based in Vienna, with the role located at the Vienna office.

Flexible working hours and a home office policy.

Salary is at least gross EUR 3.843 per month under the collective agreement, and the offer will be higher to reflect experience.

Equal opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • New Apple hardware, fitness and public transport support, lunch benefit, language classes, professional training budget, and the chance to attend global conferences.
  • 5 weeks of vacation.
  • Office with a rooftop terrace, fully stocked kitchen and barista-grade coffee machines.
  • Competitive compensation packages that reflect current market conditions.
