Description

The company is building a single-port surgical platform that brings together robotics, instruments and accessories, and workflow software into one connected system.

This senior industrial design role covers the company's robotic surgery systems, where you refine current product lines and help shape new ones.

You work hands-on through every design phase, turning findings from real users into design opportunities.

You will work with engineering, clinical development, human factors, user research, product management and other designers to define and carry out future product work.

You turn complex technical constraints into forms that are clear to use, practical to manufacture and right in appearance, weighing ergonomics, proportion, color, materials and process.

The work involves exploring and testing many ideas, using evidence to pick a direction and bring teams into agreement.

You present design vision and user needs as clear stories that win over stakeholders and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects on your own or share them with other industrial designers.
  • Use a user-centered process to frame problems and define opportunities.
  • Plan projects with design leads and design managers.
  • Turn technical and ergonomic requirements into a range of options that balance usability, utility, manufacturability and desirability.
  • Join product and engineering groups early to contribute user-centered thinking and early concept designs.
  • Work with other UX team members on integrated user experiences.
  • Take part in user research, usability testing and clinical research labs.
  • Attend cross-functional meetings and forums, and push work forward.
  • Use 2D and 3D tools to develop and show design opportunities.
  • Align industrial design goals with those of process partners.
  • Give brand attributes physical form.
  • Build functional and appearance prototypes to explore and check design choices.
  • Hand manufacturable design proposals to engineering for production.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional industrial design experience.
  • A portfolio showing a methodical, human-centered process and products taken from concept to production.
  • A proven record of working with engineering and product marketing to bring products to market.
  • Prototyping skills that range from quick foam models to complex functional learning prototypes.
  • Strong storytelling and presentation skills, with a user-centered point of view.
  • Strong 2D skills in sketching, storyboarding and digital rendering.
  • Strong 3D CAD and visualization skills for technically viable designs.
  • Extensive SolidWorks experience is required.
  • A solid grasp of materials, manufacturing processes, DFM and DFA.
  • A bachelor's degree at minimum in industrial design.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for case observation.
  • Preferred: complex surfacing experience.
  • Preferred: medical device or regulated product design experience.
  • Preferred: experience leading design efforts from concept to production.
  • Preferred: a drive to design meaningful, groundbreaking products that affect people's lives.
  • Preferred: curiosity about user behavior and eagerness to learn in the field and in the lab.
  • Preferred: enthusiasm for hard problems alongside a capable, energetic team.
  • Preferred: strategic, systems-thinking approach to work.
  • Preferred: strong teamwork, including brainstorming, facilitating and presenting.
  • Preferred: high capacity for technical problem solving and execution.
  • Preferred: reliability and a commitment to top-quality design output.
  • Preferred: creative problem solving.
  • Preferred: mentoring and inspiring other designers.
  • Preferred: working independently and finding information as needed.
  • Preferred: a bias toward action and a willingness to support the team and project.
  • Preferred: organized, responsive communication and a strong team player.
  • Preferred: refined aesthetic sense and artistic skill.
  • Preferred: a deep, ongoing curiosity about all things design.
